Weekly Estate and Garage sale finds (pics)

It’s been really quiet on the yard sales around here but this past Saturday was different in a great way. I made some good finds and a lead that might increase my personal record connection with some nice rockabilly albums from a long time musician that’s had a rockabilly band for 35+ years. His personal collection was really something to see in person.

My first stop was a good ways from home but I was going to be in that town later that day so it kinda worked out. They advertised vintage stereo gear so I waited out front until they were officially ready for me to shop. The pile was pretty good and I really couldn’t complain about pricing.

Everything works so far but I haven’t tested the Sears Silvertone record player yet. I’m pretty sure it’s a rebadged Miracord but if anybody else has info, I’d love to hear it. Just cycling the buttons feels like a Miracord but I’ll know once I look underneath.

The other pieces were a Pioneer SX-9000 reverb amp/receiver and Pioneer SX-1000TA. I thought the 9000 was a quad receiver at first but was happy to see I was mistaken at home. The 1000 is incredibly clean inside and out. There’s a bit of grime on the knobs but the wooden cabinet is spotless
Very nice.

Picked up a nice pair of National/Panasonic 8" Full-Range speakers at an estate sale today. These appear to be NOS, though they have a couple blemishes. I don't think they were ever mounted. Still have the original blue velvet seal! They measure ~6ohms but I have not tested them for music yet. They are so cool with the black ball HF diffuser mounted to the pole piece. 8W max, so must be high efficiency and designed for small tube amps, maybe would work great with SET. Quite a find. There was a derelict console unit at the sale, and it had an open side where a speaker probably went, with the other side closed. I managed to get the closed side opened, and it revealed a drawer that had these two speakers plus misc stuff like an AKAI tape splicer, a Roberts Demagnetizer, and a bunch of small (3.5"?) blank R2R tapes. When I checked out, the guy said "where did you find those?" I don't think anyone had opened that side of the cabinet for 50 years. Here are some pics:

Pardon my ignorance, but is that a ball in the middle?

Yes indeed! It is mounted on a rod coming from the pole piece, so the ball stays fixed in place. It is intended to block high frequency radiation from the opposite side of the cone to minimize interference that would cause frequency response aberrations.

Wow!! Blind me with science.

Once thanksgiving passed and we were back onto the normal schedule, I was out running errands on Saturday and spotted a hand written Estate Sale sign near the house. Since I had some free time, I stopped by and it happened to be in a very old neighborhood with larger ranch homes built in the early 50s with little turnover. I’ve always found great stuff in that neighborhood and this home didn’t disappoint.

Sitting in the living rim with a bunch of junk stacked on them were this nice pair of Altec Lansing 879A Santana speakers. Aside from a few scuffs, the cabs are mint and the slate tops were free of any damage. The dust caps are perfect and there’s no chew marks, cat/dog stains or smoke residue. Some of the surround dope migrated to the bottom but that happens.

I’ve read mixed reviews on how these things sound but i figured I’ve give them a shot and I brought them home.

Since I just finished up a SX-780 for a customer and it was on my bench, it was the perfect test subject. After an hour or so of listening, I can’t complain. These things can handle some power and never seem to distort, no matter how much power you throw at them. At 20% volume the cd player was skipping so badly I had to move it to a separate stand so I could keep playing music.

Looks like the whole neighborhood is going to be listening to Christmas music with me this month

Went to an estate sale in the Berkeley Hills on Saturday. It was scheduled to start at 11AM, and I knew the estate sale company put up a "sign-up sheet" so I went early, figuring I'd sign up and then go do some errands, but it was so far up in the hills that I decided to stick around. I was #17 on the list, and at 11AM they let 14 people in, Hmph! Then about 10 min later they let in 3 more, and I was off and running. I saw they from the pics there was a decent TT, but alas it was over priced. Everything was over priced! But I was first down to the basement records, and picked up a nice group in good shape. One was the Stockhausen on Time records, and it is pristine. Also got 4 Bowie albums I didn't have, including an interesting compilation from NZ.

As I was leaving, I checked out a table in the corner, and it had some audio stuff on it. There was a box marked "Thorens" and inside were a couple of SME headshell boxes, a couple of Stanton boxes marked 881S and 881S Mk2, plus some misc record cleaning stuff. Who knows what folks picked up ahead of me! What I actually ended up with was a SME Ultra Light S2 headshell with a 881S Mk2 mounted, plus an empty S2 headshell box, the two Stanton boxes, and a 681EE that was inside one of the Stanton boxes. After getting it all home, I checked the 681EE and found it had some wear, though still useable. Then I checked the 881S, and found it was essentially new! I don't see any sign of wear on it, though I do expect it was lightly used since it was mounted to the headshell, and has fingerprints and a little dust. But I don't see any contact flats formed, so I'm confident it's "like new".

I seem to be fairly lucky with the SME hardware lately. I now have 3 or maybe 4 headshells from various estate sales, and now have an extra box for one of them.

I was not aware of the 881S's reputation til I got it home. I have several 747S in P-mount, and they are excellent, but apparently the 881S is in a class by itself.

By the way, as I left, there were at least 50 people standing in line to get in. The company that ran the sale is a "one out/one in" after the first 20 or so. I spent 45 min in there, so those 50 folks had been waiting and would continue to wait for a long time to get into that sale.

Polk PRO 600 sub at a nearby town recycling center. Looked brand new. Left it there.

Went to an estate sale one town over. They had about 30 guitars, dozens of pedals, rooms full of parts and accessories and other instruments. Picked this pedal and an American strat pickguard, as well as a pair of monster prolink cables, and a pedaltrain nano pre wired with a one spot. Hit it with a couple of my friends and coworkers. The guitars and instruments were all very overpriced but this stuff was priced very fairly. Happy with my finds as were my friends. Needed the pickguard for a strat I'm building, and the pedal is a hand made beauty based on hendrix's uni-vibe.

Picked up some albums at the thrifts this weekend. Got 9 of the early Spyro Gyra albums this morning. Sad that the Loverboy album was sealed except one corner had been ripped off.
