Hey Jay,
As well traveled as that Lamm has been in the last week, I think I'm going to give it a rest and leave it home, that way, I get a chance to listen to everyone else's equipment down at Jayfest. If I end up with a listening room at next year's AK Fest, you can bet that Lamm will be there with me. :yes:

I was shocked at how different the Marantz SA-11s2 was with SACD playback in particular. Like I said, my player does a fine job and I didn't at all feel like it sucked in comparison, but you really get what you pay for.

CD (or SACD for that matter) playback improvement has not really been addressed in my system until the recent purchase of the SA-8001. I had been running with my MSB Link III for some time with rotating transports in and out. The MSB is a great DAC for the money but with chipset "improvements" happening seemingly monthly, it is old technology.

I honestly was sceptical about the SA-11s2's ability to sound that much better than than the SA-8001. Law of diminishing returns and all. The bottom line is that the 8001 pretty much hit all the notes but lacked the liquid depth of soundstage the SA-11s2 has in spades.

Don't talk to me about the Lamm. I'm too busy trying to figure out what I can sell off to help fund the purchase of my own :drool:

I'm going back and forth betweet getting a GREAT CD player or using the IO-Box with a GREAT DAC. Any thoughts?
 
I like my Marantz CD5003, pretty much everything about it... I'm assuming the SA-11s2 is better, so I don't see any way to go wrong there.

Both approaches work.
On the Cambridge Audio side, there's the new DACmagic, which uses the chipset in the Azur 740C and allows external inputs up to 24/192.
I have the Azur 840C CD player with those external inputs that will take anything in from can and string to 24/192 and upsample/process it. That's one punchy box with the next level of chipset and that puts CD into its proper perspective. That is, room ambiance trailoff and sustain issues are slightly truncated . . . 16 bits will do that . .. and everything else is in fine perspective and I find NO, that is ZERO, digititis. And that's only two choices from one vendor.

I can say the same with my Lexicon RT-20 universal player. The analog outputs are truly superior and non-fatiguing.
That's all the experience I can provide. I've heard others that are also good.

The chipsets are fast dropping in price though and we all benefit from that. This is my experience in my system.
I hope we aren't going too far off topic. This is RetroStereo's baby.

Thanks Ken, been a summer-long project and I have a couple weeks of more work left. We're hoping to be done by the time I cruise down for Jay's get together. I need to find a job so I can rest up a bit! :D
