i'm not qualified to comment. i'm reasonably sure you wont get a consensus on one. I am sure you'll get several good suggestions. Price point will make it a moving target too.:lurk:

Those two don't seem to go together as top tts are over $100k and most starting to get intos are much less. Good Luck.

Agreed, there will never be a unanimous model or brand among-st everyone here. Keep in mind that we all hear differently, but I would hazard a guess that we all have a preference based on sound, mainly from the cartridge.

Welcome to AudioKarma!

You can use Google or other search apps to research the many threads/posts here that address your query. Most of the members already have their own opinion, and it is usually the mfg of the favorite TT that they own, and how it interacts with their other gear.

Get out there and listen to some TTs, 'talk' to a few people, and start to build your opinion.

Good luck, & Enjoy the listening - - -

I suspect that the OP is not aware of the dozens of manufacturers who are currently making turntables that cost more than $10,000. Basis, VPI, ClearAudio, Brinkmann, VYGER, TransRotor, Dr Feickert, SME.....

I doubt many people here have heard the super high end tables (which cost over $100,000).

Most of us probably have favorites, but not best ever.

Yeah, impossible question to answer. Now, if you are looking for questions on best vintage, best value, most popular, etc., some more definitions on the question, then you would get some answers.

However this question, no matter how defined, is really going to be the opinion of the poster. In most cases, it will be a good opinion, but an opinion nonetheless. Plus the cartridge/tonearm has the most important impact on how a turntable sounds and there are as many, if not more, opinions on cartridges, as well as how a specific cartridge works with a specific arm/table.

I'll give you a couple names if you are looking for vintage. While not the best of the day, the AR and AR XA, are very popular vintage turntables, do little wrong and many things right. Also very easy to hot rod, should you wish. Thorens also made numerous models that are most collectors shelves or short lists of turntables they wish to have. While there are many better turntables, the two brands listed above are not uncommon and are usually available on Ebay at any time.

Everyone knows the best turntable ever built was either the Goldmund Studio Reference.

Or the Walker Proscenium.

I just noticed that the OP is in the UK.

They certainly have a number of fine turntable manufacturers over there, such as Rega, Linn, and SME. You might even be able to get some of these in the UK used market at a reasonable price.

BASF: Define best! I.e., best in which regard? Just performance? Comfort/ease of use? Extra features? Robustness? Placement insensitivity? Insensitivity to mechanical and/or acoustic feedback? DJ suitability? Repairability? Price-Performance? Low power consumption?

So there can be no single best turntable, just as there can be no single best car or whatever due to the individual mix of preferences and requirements.

Greetings from Munich!
