What do you pay for electricity per kWh these days?

8.5' to 11' - just high enough that I have to use a big arse ladder
I have a 12’ A frame ladder set up in the entrance foyer blocking the rarely used front door as I type. Hard to move, old, aluminum and heavy. Just gets me to the ceiling that needs a bit of work after the skylight leaked a bit.


We pay for the privilege of having electricity ($11.29) then pay to get it here ($.10236/kWr) then select who to pay for the actual juice. Price has gone up per kWh actual juice is 10-15¢ depending on supplier. So about a quarter per kilowatt-hour.
 
We live in a burb of Minneapolis. 0.1352 peak, off peak 0.649 in the summer. Winter is about .01 less.

I have that same ladder, it stands in the garage and I hate when I have to haul it into the house and set it up... I also hate standing on it to do work over my head as my balance is not so good anymore, afraid I'm going to fall off sometimes.
 
I just discovered a few days ago that I have an AC return vent with filter - mounted at about the 10-foot level of the living room wall.

Seriously, WTF? I can't do step ladders anymore, so it's a "handyman job." I'm waiting until I have at least three more HM projects before calling RUFUS, or ZEKE over to the house.
 
I'm connected to a rural Co-op in Colorado privilege to be connected $37.50, that's $450/yr. It's $0.103/kwh. I have solar panels and a net meter. If I produce more than I use it is settled annually, but the buy back is $0.034/kwh. Last May my bill was only $17. So I produced 588 kwh more than I used. Solar is the way to go if you can get a good deal on installation and a good deal from the power company like I have with no buy back at a lower rate. Whatever excess I make gets credited into my account... after about three years most people here in ABQ will never use up all their credits (300+ days of sunshine).

My current Co-op didn't offer any credits. My previous Co-op had great credits, they would even pay for a Tesla double power bank, if they could access the batteries for 5 yrs.

I tried to join a local solar coop. They demanded an up front payment as well as credit card to be attached for automatic billing. Nah. First of all I no longer use credit cards and trust no one with unfettered access (excepting vehicle insurance 'cause I have to) to any account. Sure they'll fix it but been through that headache. Always "computer error."

I'm slowly going off grid. Have to figure out how to live sans A/C. heat knocks the crap outta me.
 
In my area, SOLAR payback is at least 13 years, and can easily stretch to 20 years. I'm 77. I think I'll stand pat.

The power company here is PG&E and they treated us great. Our contractor did a great set up (no drips, no leaks!) and then PG&E did their inspection and said he did good work. Out nearest pole was 'vintage' and not well set up for receiving our generated electricity....so, you won't believe this...they came and installed a nice new modern fancy transformer so we could have our electricity go to them...here it comes...for free! We pay a hook up fee, and have had zero electricity expense since.

We went with 56 panels and three wall batteries and run 25+ percent over-production in case we ever get EVs.

The batteries even power our well, which is unmetered.

Twice a year we fill the propane tank for the stove. Heat, AC, water, etc are all otherwise electric now.

I am rosy about the future.

56 panels ??? I only have 13 and they make more than I'll ever use... break even with the Fed/State credits is 3 years.

Built in 1993. Not inefficient, but not overly efficient. Very typical of all houses built in this area (DFW) in the early to mid 1990s.

Two stories. 20', 15' and 10' ceilings. Over 3600 sq ft. That's a lot of volume to cool. What is your volume? The most I have ever used is 4529 kWh, the least is 849, with an average of 1863 kWh.

Three HVAC A/C central units - a 4-ton for downstairs, a 3-ton for upstairs, and a 1.8-ton for the master suite. (no window units, swamp coolers, etc.)

When it's this hot, we cool it to about 76° inside. Add in all the other stuff - washer/dryer, lights, security lighting, TVs, 7 stereo systems throughout the house, ceiling fans, her hair dryers, curling irons, stovetop, oven, etc etc.

We have had eleven 100°F+ days just in August so far - and the other four days have been highs of 98°F+. We haven't seen a low temperature this month less than 83°F so far. The forecast for the next 14 days shows 100°F+ each day. It's been 30 days since we had any rain, so that ain't helping either.

Some years are hotter than others. Last year we had only seven 100°F days - all summer.

And no - you're not being anal. I have kept a spreadsheet since 2009 of monthly usage data. In addition, if you have a smart meter, https://www.smartmetertexas.com/home is a useful tool. It currently shows I'm at an average of 129.6 kWh/day in August, so if I'm lucky, I'll only make it to 3888 kWh in August......

Saying that, I'm more than willing to use electricity - rates are lower here that most other places, and I didn't work for 40 years just to not spend money during retirement. I'm going to be comfortable. And since I haven't had any debt for 30+ years, I'm not too worried about the cost of this utility.
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. Your situation is much the same as mine, and like you, I'm not reluctant to use the energy I need to remain comfortable. Ours is a 3700 sqft home with high ceilings, so a lot of cubic feet of air to manage. It's located in the desert outside Phoenix, where temps can exceed 120F degrees during the day and nighttime temps dropping down to the 90's during the summers. Our 3-car garage reduces the first floor area that the A/C needs to cool, so only a 3.5-ton for that one, but my second floor requires a 4-ton unit to keep it down to 76 in the summertime. There are multiple TV's and audio systems throughout the house, with at least one running all the time since I've retired.

We had the house built in 2003. Its construction was touted as Energy-Star efficient, with double-pane windows and high R-ratings in the walls and ceilings, but I also run a large in-ground saltwater pool, which consumes quite a bit of energy. Fortunately, our KWh rate is low, like yours, so last month's bill for 5642 KWh was "only" $714.20, including all the fees and taxes.

I checked plans once years ago before replacing the HVAC systems. I don't recall the numbers, but the demand was higher and the demand plan was more expensive than basic.

House was built in 2005, two story, 3187 sq. ft.
