Thanks very much. Up until you mentioned it, I'd always wondered why no one had come up with such a tester. Now that I know it exists I'll have to get one. What a time saver that would be for me.

The AnaTek version they offer now is different from the one I bought several years ago with LED numerics.
Again, feel that cap after the unit had been operating for a while, It should be no warmer than its normal-looking neighbor. If it is getting warm then replace it. If the new one gets warm, too, then it's time to get the unit serviced. Of course, be sure that there is not a heat source near the cap that is warming it.

Can someone define what is a high end preamp ? what features does a high end preamp must included?

High quality parts and construction, competent engineering, sonic "transparency". It should not impart sonic characteristics of its own not part of the input source material.

Not crazy high end but quite good at its original $1700 retail price. It has all the digital inputs I need along with separate 32-bit/192kHz TI Burr Brown DAC's for L/R channels and a phono input. Plus, I'd rather have remote control, which this does. I've been using this model now for a few years with no complaints. Before, it was a fully rebuilt Carver C-1 preamp that had remote control added to it, which is nice, but I have to run separate DAC's and I wanted to clean things up.

I have a Marantz AV600 tuner/preamp which I use in two-channel mode in my main system. I got tired of the FX-01's battery running out of juice, not to mention the lack of a motorized gain control. The Marantz also makes the system simpler, since I was able to remove the source switcher from the system.

What’s high end? I have a device that selects a source and attenuates volume. A passive controller that uses an auto-transformer rather than a potentiometer: a Sonic Euphoria PLC.

Thanks very much for posting that picture. I've never had the cover off my CA-7A, I didn't realize it was a true dual-mono design.
I think this is the best preamp Nakamichi ever produced. I wish I had the remote, because with that and a couple of DIN cables I'd have unified control over the rest of my Nakamichi stuff.

It is a true dual mono design. But I've heard that the two toroidal transformers can be misleading. One of the transformers is dedicated to MC phono section and the other transformer looks after everything else.
