What I learned on Craigslist

At least here in Muskegon, MI--I can post beautiful pics of beautiful vintage equipment and get no response whatsoever. What a waste of time!

Ahhg! You should post them (and tell me) when I'm driving through! We just drove through Michigan on our way across the north shore of Superior... I could have stopped in Muskegon if properly motivated... ;) :deal:

I've learned that if you ask for an asking price from sellers who have omitted same they will badmouth you. Every time.

Well, at least both times lately....

if you ask for an asking price from sellers who have omitted same

Sellers on CL that don't list a price get this, every single time.

Flag early & often, CL is not eBay.

After inquiring about a pair of speakers on Cincinnati CL tonight, I learned that it is too much work to look on the back of the speaker for a model number when asked. The conversation went as follows:

Me: Hello, do you have the model number for the speakers you are selling? Thanks.
Seller: no and for 10 dollars I am not going to go look it up they sound great
Me: I didn't realize that it would be so hard for you to turn them around and look on the back. Forget it. Good luck selling them.

What is wrong with these people?! How do you expect anyone to ever want to buy your stuff when you aren't even motivated enough to offer a proper description or details?:thumbsdn:

On the other hand, she did say they sound great... :scratch2:

Yes indeed, I've encountered that a lot. They're vague in the description, I "dare" to ask them for more information and they can't be bothered. In fact, I'm sure many people never even reply to my emails because I asked what the brand and model of whatever they're selling is. I had to nearly beat back a seller with a whip on a pair of speakers that he listed with no description so I came out to look at them just to find they're an off-brand sold in a retail chain who was convinced because they were so cheap ($40 IIRC) that there's no way anyone could not like 'em (Nevermind the fact he had them out of phase because he didn't know how to wire it up properly - nor to his knowledge that I've bought far nicer speakers than his for half the price...)

I always hope that CL sellers learn from their mistakes, but I'm not convinced they do. I've seen the same pair of Kenwood speakers with 15" woofers for $200 for months, and he constantly mentioned in the ad "Sounded great with my Eleven G receiver when I had it!" to which I thought "Why tell me about a nice piece of equipment you USED to have when trying to justify selling some junky equipment for way too much?" If I see any more of this horrible Techwood stuff with the carpet cabinets and the gaudy over-lacquered faux wood fronts with the cheap horn tweeter (Pizeo in a horn enclosure rather) and plastic grille guards I'm going to buy them and destroy them just so I don't have to see them anymore...on a related note, anyone want to donate $500 for a good cause?

The general population is not that likely to even figure out that they're making mistakes or that they could have more success with a few simple techniques. Let's not forget the average IQ of the population, and the fact that half the people are below it. :D

But, we can still get a few chuckles out of their exploits.

I saw a pair of BPC-era Sony MTM's described roughly as follows:

"Drivers are as follows: (2) 6.5" woofers; (1) 1" dome tweeter; and (1) 2.5" midrange hole."

Midrange hole?! Apparently cost cutting measures have hit a new low.

I learned that a fellow can advertise a nice set of Advent AS-2 speakers for $60.00 on CL, and he'll reply to your voicemail the next day, and set a convenient appointment. Then when you get there, you'll find a nice set of AS-2s for $60.00, have a pleasant audio-guy conversation about them and other stuff, and take home some neat speakers.

Just noted for balance.

I learned that JBL speakers might really be junk?
i say this because?
because i have sent e-mails to like 5 different folks on my local Cl asking when a good time would be for me to swing by and have a listen. i never get a reply.
But i can send e-mails to every low budget speaker i see and get a reply within twelve hours.
either JBL home speakers really suck, or the cats selling them dont want me to own a pair.

CL is definitely not Wal-Mart.

I went out to look at what I thought were Tannoy System 12 Studio Monitors. Turns out they were the far less valuable System 10. The seller could not or would not demo the speakers. Luckily I had wire and a AA battery. Tweeters were blown. Very tricky, this one. Perhaps the less savvy (and more anxious) will not be so lucky to avoid this.

One talks about the "people" out there in CL land but my experience with a supposedly AK'er yesterday was much like these "other" people bitch about.

I put in an ad for speakers and in a short time, got a call from a guy who sounded pleasant. He asked the typical questions about the speakers and got around to talking about other audio stuff. Discovered he visits AK here and asked if I went to the Detroit show as he had....blah..blah...blah...

Anyways, asked if he could come over and pick up the speakers and when would be a good time. I responded with you could come now or this evening as I am free. He responded by saying he had a few things to finish up at work and would be over and asked nicely if I wanted him to call before he came over. I replied that would be nice.....and that I would set everything up in garage for him to hear and would hook up a Sansui 6700 to it. He replied that would be great! This was around 3:00 in afternoon.

Soooo..I carried everything out, hooked it up, and waited and waited...wife came home from work and we usually do a four mile walk/run but I passed as I said this gentleman was gonna call and come over to pick up speakers. She left and I waited and waited...........

Not a word from the goof..... pisses me off for wasting my time. I hope he reads this as I am calling ya out my man.

No shows suck. I usually do a good job of screening them out but you never know. Perhaps you could have called back later to say: "I'm just about to start setting up your speakers for a demo and I want to make sure you are still coming." This works for me especially when there is setup time involved or if I have to re-arrange my schedule. This doesn't prevent the goofs who think you are Wal-Mart and will give a free demo.

Well, the JBL sellers probably get a lot more email than the guys offering 'low budget speakers.' When it comes to JBLs, there's nothing like being first.

No shows suck.

Truer words have never been spoken. It is even worse when you are the buyer and you are traveling to the seller to pick something up. For example, a month or so back I was trying to buy a large lot of cassette tapes off of this guy who lived about 45 minutes away. We set a time to meet, and I called him as I was driving to his house, only to find out he was unavailable due to a doctors appointment. WTH? How do you not know when you have a doctors appointment?

I hate CL people!

Another thing that pisses me off when said CL seller misrepresents something. I recently had a deal with a car that was supposedly rust free with 30k on the clock. Skeptical, I asked for more pictures. Of course, all the pictures looked good, so I loaded up and took off...350 miles (one way) later, I find that the car is in fact a rusty piece of $hit, and go home empty handed. What a waste.

I learned when the ad says 'If you can still read this ad, it's still for sale' that means it's really sold and the seller was to lazy to take the ad down.

I learned that buying a high-end amp with "1 channel out" means that the seller tore off two switches from the back of the amp. He was too embarrassed to admit it. The stereo/mono switch being broken caused the one channel to stop working.

The fix was $8 in parts and about an hour taking it apart and putting it back together. It works great!

I learned that you can buy amazing, dimension-defying speakers on Craigslist.

From Providence RI CL ad for "Technic" speakers:

"Set of 2 Technic speakers. 18" woofer, 5" subwoofer, 3" tweeter. Speakers are 18" high, 14" wide, and 10" deep. "

I'm not sure what's more impressive, the 18" woofer in a 14" cabinet or what I can only imagine to be the bass performance of the 5" 'subwoofer' :D
