What I learned on Craigslist

I learned that the selling price on the amp is firm. Just like it was firm last week when it was $50 more, and the week before that when it was another $50 more, etc.

I learned that if your speakers RAWK! they are worth more.

I learned that even though the stereo is only working sometimes the seller is sure it is a cheap fix so they are asking $25 less than it goes for on eBay. Unfortunately every electronic shop here has a $75 bench fee.

CL ads

That everything is a receiver...

"I have 3 Onkyo recievers one is the Equalizer the other one is AM/FM radio and the third one is 6 disk cd player if you want them"

That got a good chuckle. :D

I have just an opposite experience: almost everything is a tuner...:scratch2:

I got a tuner once, turned out to be a tube integrated amp. I didn't complain too much considering the price - $0.

Oh, I had a doozey the other day. I've had a turntable listed on CL, with some pricing for various pieces needed to get it going. The one bad reply I got out of a handful of nice ones went something like this:

"The prices you mention don't mean s#!t. It will take time a money to get this item working. I'll give you $50.00."

Let's see...one minute to put on an anti-skating weight, 20 seconds to put a new belt on (or heck, I'll throw on the belt I have...for FREE...if you're nice), five seconds for the felt platter mat...yeah, it will take "time a money." I just flagged his reply as a spammer and went on my way. :D

Crazy innit?

Today I learned that the bundle pricing isn't always as good of a deal as you'd think it could be...

BC 312M Signal Corps Receiver- GOOD Condition-- asking $89.00
BC 221 A Signal Corps Frequency Detector- GOOD Condition - asking $50.00
Handicrafters Short wave Receiver- GOOD Condition - asking $50.00
If you want to purchase all for one Price $ 200.00 for all together !!

the true value of vintage equipment goes like this- if the item sold for $500 in 1978, that's $2700 in today's money, so give me a $900 and save two thirds!

this ad was posted last year and was on a D&S post

Tons of vintage stereo gear (DMV)
I have closets full of vintage stereo amps, receivers and speakers. Most of it I picked up at yard sales and thrifts. This stuff cost big money in their day, so now all of it must be worth at least as much as your home. I haven't used it much so I can't tell you much about condition, but as you know for fact vintage gear never goes bad and is a better investment than enriched plutonium in Pakistan. I will base my prices on the highest Ebay sale ever, plus about 25% because you won't have to pay for shipping. The stuff I can post a link to an positive internet review I will really ask a buttload for, since it is more desirable.
I will not accept any low offers, and will continue posting at the same high price until you get so tired of seeing the same ads you start flagging me.
Thanks for looking and good luck.

I learned how dense some habitual CL posters (spammers) are. "I will keep posting, so go ahead and flag my post, I will just repost it anyway you losers!" I see this a lot in postings for the Nintendo Wii. Some out there are modifying the Wii, which is OK, but they are also selling hard drives loaded with hundreds of games, including Wii games that are "ripped" and available through various places illegally. Clear cut piracy. They continually get flagged on CL but keep on posting anyway.

BTW, I always flag posts with keywords. If I'm searching for Polk speakers, I don't appreciate seeing ads for chrome 18" wheels for a Honda Civic, or a "Rollex" watch (and yes, I know the right way to spell "Rolex" ;) ).

I've learned that out of all the crazy, wild and many times just plain stupid ads that we all see on CL, Ebay, the newspapers, etc., that there are actually people out there that buy that stuff.!!! Of course none of us on this thread would be one of those thankfully................would we.........???

Happy Turkey Day to all...........Terry

1. Normal wear and tear = thrown down stairs during domestic dispute.
2. Unable to test = doesn't work.
3. Needs minor repair = needs parts long obsolete / needs digital circuit diagnosis and reprogramming.
4. Retails for $500 = you can buy it new online for $300.
5. Meet at far end of Walmart parking lot = don't go there.

Meet me at six and I'll demo the speakers he says.
Drive for 30 minutes and get there at six.
"Oh, I just sold them".
Learned the there are different time zones in CL land.

How about this?

"really big and really loud speakers - $250
each speaker has two 15in speakers and one 5in i dont even have to turn up the volume half way and the room is vibrating there really nice and brand new email if your interested "

I've learned that everyone at Starbucks is actually conducting some sort of Craigslist transaction. Most people go in and get coffee and leave, everyone else is awaiting a transaction....lol

You know, to be fair, it might take more time than you mention, esp if you count time to search for sources, time to order the needed items, and time for them to arrive. I mean, not everyone has a selection of spare TT parts lying around....

Doesn't mean $50.00 wasn't a ridiculous lowball, and there sure as heck no need for him to get vulgar and throw attitude at you. I wouldn't have dealt with him either.

*sigh* an ad today reminded me of something else to take away from Craigslist.

To get top dollar for your vintage equipment on Craiglist, you don't need to list the models or have pictures of anything! Heck, you don't even need the brand! Just an ad like "Stereo Equipment" with a body that reads "5 pieces" - that's all anyone needs to make a decision on it!

There has been an ad on and off the Albany Craigslist for about 2 years.

" Radio Old, all guts there, $200, worth it "

Here's a good one from today.
