What I learned on Craigslist

I learned that sifting through car audio to view home stereo gear is a waste of time and really sucks the big one. Can't someone do something about that across the board?
Yes indeed, this is a huge problem. I file suggestions to Craigslist all the time suggesting a Car Audio category since electronics is littered with that junk - they refuse to add it. They're really just being lazy since it wouldn't take them hardly any effort to code in an extra category...

On a related note, don't ever worry if car audio on Craigslist is a good deal. Car audio fanatics (i.e. Bassheads) will chime in mere minutes after a bad deal and proceed to swear and curse at the person listing the ad about what a rip off his system is, brag about how much money they wasted on their system (Before someone busted into their car and stole it), and how much harder it hit than their "junk".

These PSA style car audio posts are so frequent on Craigslist, it gets real old...

I learned that sometimes....just sometimes you meet a really nice person and get a fair deal on a real nice piece.
+1 To this as well. Seems like I go for weeks without buying anything and then I go to look at something and they end up being real cool and I get an even better price than I expected.

That nothing is assured.

On the day I was coming around to pick up an SL-1300 - being the first buyer and offering the most money ($180), I was told I would be given first pick to better any higher offers - I was texted with "Sorry, let it go for 250" while driving there. So much for 'first priority'...

IMHO, you were kind of asking for it by participating in a Craigslist auction to begin with.

I learned that you can mock eBay/CL gear flippers anonymously!
Obnoxious CL post
Original text for when this ad expires: "Stereos wanted - $999 (Your house)

Hello, I'm looking for really stupid people that want to sell their used electronics really really cheap and have no idea their worth. I may pay up to a penny on the dollar
if you're lucky and I'm feeling generous. That's what I do. I'm a low baller when it comes to buying and a high baller when it comes to selling. I buy low and sell high. Only I may be do that because I'm VERY special. (my mom told me so).
Please sell me your high end audio components for pennies. I especially want McIntosh and Vintage Fisher with tubes. I want all original tubes too. I take them out and replace them with Chinese and Russian crap. I sell the tubes separately. I also list Sansui for highly inflated prices but don't ever sell the stuff. How many weeks can I list the same thing over and over until it doesn't sell, again?
I have a few pairs of Bose 901 speakers that I sell for more than retail and then charge extra for the equalizer even though they don't work w/o it. When I buy them I tell you they are worthless w/o them too to.
Please call me and sell me your stuff cheap, don't think it's worth my time to come look at it unless you all but give to to me. When I'm done screwing you if you've been good I'll let you lick my butt.

If you're offended by this, good. For the rest of us, we are all laughing at you."

I learned that keeping your cap lock on means you REALLY, REALLY ARE GIVING SOMEONE A GOOD DEAL! Todays listing:

THIS UNIT IS LIKE NEW I BOUGHT AND USED MAYBE 6 MONTHS BEFORE I MOVED TO A SMALLER HOUSE AND NOW ITS JUST TO MUCH SURROUND SYSTEM FOR MY SMALLER LIVING ROOM MY LOSS IS YOUR GAIN COMES COMPLETE WITH YAMAHA SPEAKERS AND POWERED SUBWOOFER BELOW IS ALL THE SPECS ON THE RECEIVER IT IS A SIMPLE PPLUG IN AND PLAY EVEN HAS A MIC THAT SETS THE E/Q UP AND EVER THING NO DISAPPOINTMENTS HERE CALL OR TXT

I learned that "excellent working condition," when used without a picture, means "fell off a truck, and was subsequently further destroyed in a hamfisted attempt to put it back together with construction screws.":sigh:

"I know it won't turn on right now, but trust me, it was working fine when I used it last... in the '80s... before I put it in the cellar... which floods every year...":dunno:

My kind of humor. :D

I've learned that asking for the model of stereo equipment is equivalent to neurosurgery for some people and commonly stumps the seller so much so that they never reply back. Or they provide the serial number instead of the model number.

On the same token, one should simply just trust people when they say something like "Selling nice vintage turntable - $100" and provide no details other than "Works good". Asking what brand and the model is rude and unnecessary. After all, wouldn't you just buy a car if it was listed as "Nice car - $4000". What's with these people anymore who want to know the brand and model of what they're buying? Isn't it enough that the seller defined a vague category of what they're selling is? I think I might list some stereo gear in the future as "Stuff - $[Price]". I mean, everything is stuff isn't it? Who has time to describe things anyway?

I mean really...

I've learned that Soundesign speakers are worth $20.00, if their appearance has been enhanced with folk art, and if you're "pretty sure they work."

I also learned it's a clever trick to say "Don't really know anything about them." Playing dumb like this can make bargain-hunters think you are offering valuable equipment/art objects cheap, since you don't know its true value.

I learned you're a "scammer" if the beater receiver you sell for $15 which worked fine for two days straight, including a 9 hour Graduation Party, drifts a bit on FM at the buyer's house, but stays locked tight here for 4 hours on a 4' piece of zip cord for an antenna, after you give him his $15 back...

I've learned that whatever damage the photos show, if there are any photos.
Or whatever damage is described, if there aren't any photos, NEVER affects performance, or audibility, EVER!!!!

Vistance - The lack of model numbers is a major peeve of mine too. The car analogy reminded me on my pet peeve in car ads "low miles" - in the same space, why not provide the actual mileage and let the reader determine if that's low or not.

Ooh! Ooh! I know the answer to that one! It's because the Truth in Advertising law makes it a federal felony to tell the truth in an advertisement.

I learned that pictures are used in sales listings to give a vague indication that something like the items described may exist.
