Although I find the cable subject most prone to flame wars on audio forums where the "high" end $ cables pros get a 'bash' with scientific counter arguments while having barely no room for their attempt in explaination for their preference (not that it's my case) but even if I have my preference (with argumentation) I accept and unerstand others for their own. I admit to disagree but not to insult, dismiss or bash.
The late addition of the Technics Sl-1200 mk2 vs anything else here to the pole tempts to change my vote. That since some oppiniated pro 1200's fundamentalists just refuse the arguments from others preferences for other turntables. Ex owner of a 1200 for years I have come to tell appart the turntables sonic signature and find my preference for something totaly else. Explaining that to them is like heresy.
Crying occasionally the pathetic old paranoïd direct drive 'bashing' persecution that actually never existed. What did exist in the audio papers at one time was a strong preference for belt drive turntables (that of which I am now). That as much for legitimate subjective reasons and/or for other "nationalistic" or market protective posture stand against massive "imported" goods. Yet another valid matter to question or not.
With their cheaper asian labour working force alowing them to build complex circuitry the markets got floaded with direct drive turntables at affordable retail prices. On this side of Europe since the nineties at least the market got floaded with them. And indeed those direct drive turntables can be good when good. Other drive turntables as well. Only with different sonic signatures and evolutive potential for tweakers.
The hegemony of them 1200 at every dee-jay booth and the grapevine noob hype about them from a growing crowd getting into the "vinyl" re-birth craze at one time some 20+ years ago dealt me out. Sold mine to a friend and got me a new Stanton back then that I much prefered before being converted into a Thorens with a SME. Most unexpected audio orientation for me but that got me into the tweaking and learning.
Since I get to get others defective gear and help them or others with their phono set-up. That brought me a lovely not common Technics turntable model here in Europe ; a SL-1401. Revised, fixed and tested it and instantly recogniized that typical Technics SL-1XXX (at lesat) sonic signature that I don't appreciate ; like "closed-in" or "muffled-down" that some hear and dislike where others not or refuse like their devos.
