Lighting the can of wax on fire to melt it into a liquid really improved the shine of the barracks tile floors.
 
Coincidently, my Honey used that galvanized squeezer with our old rag mop, just yesterday, when cleaning the basement floor in her art room.

The "mangler" that Mom used in the 50's & 60's was an almost five foot wide machine that would heat & press laundry items against a fabric covered roller for quick ironing of larger things like bed-sheets. I don't remember ringer washers being called manglers, but that could well be the case.
 
Your mom's sounds way fancier than what I remember on Grandma's back porch!

(Looking at the post from the OP, I think it really is a mop squeezer with some parts missing)
