Today's peeve-

Speaking of commercials, did you ever notice how the video in the medication commercials are almost always played at half-speed (or some fractional speed)? Some painfully slow street dancing, some painfully slow soccer game, some painfully slow rope-swinging, etc... It makes those long-ass commercials seem even LONGER, and it drives me nuts.

Bonus Peeve-

Manufactured drama on "mechanic" shows. I was in a hotel yesterday and wanted to see what kinds of "car shows" were on "fancy cable" nowadays. What a bunch of needless drama, needless swear-bleeping, bullshit shows. Look, I just want to see people working on cars. I don't care if "Eddie's gonna be *BLEEP* (pissed) if we don't get this 'MOTOR' runnin'! He's gon' lose money! Oh noes!". How about just shaddap and crank your ratchet? I couldn't give a **** about you or Eddie, or Eddie's fictional budget. I want to see the cars, the engines, the junkyards, and cool stuff. Not actors pretending to be hillbillies, forcing cuss-words just to have them censored, and using very expensive tools improperly. Ugh. It's frustratingly unwatchable.
 
TV commercial "doctors' who lend credibility to the product.

Why is it required that each and every one of them sport the required stethoscope slung around their neck?
Did we interrupt you in your office for the commercial, or do you just wear it at all times, even when you stroll into a place where a planned commercial shoot is going to happen?

And the podiatrists or dermatologists who do this in their recommendations. When is the last time your podiatrist/dermatologist wore one around you, ready to sling it into action? Even their M.A.s use what's in the room and don't stroll around with them (in my experience).
 
On my car forums, people are always defending the BS drama in car shows with arguments like- "people won't watch if there's no drama".

I call absolute BS on that.

My rebuttal is that "This Old House" has been running since the 1980's with a no nonsense repair/rehab format including how to segments.
If that's not an example that proves it can be done, and be successful..

Two car shows without ridiculous made up deadlines and budgets, or way too much shop horseplay-

"Wheeler Dealers"
They actually give the budget and a cost breakdown.

"Steve Magnante's Junkyard Gold"
He doesn't actually fix anything, just traipses around various junkyards commenting about cars there and similar models.

A distant third is "Garage Squad" has some BS but much less than most, and they don't do over the top builds, mainly "get it back on the road" projects.

I've completely given up watching car shows on tv. I won't even try anymore. There are plenty of good car shows on U tube that don't have any of that BS.

Passing on the right if no lane is there, is illegal in most places. I’ve been pulled over for doing it. In my case, it was pretty heavy traffic and the person trying to take a left should have taken a right, or a few rights and cross at the nearby light.
Near the mall area ( busy) there is a McD’s on a corner with a light. This light has left turn lanes. I hate it when someone is exiting the restaurant drive through and wants to cut across 2 lanes of traffic and a turning lane to make an illegal left turn. They can just exit on the side street and make a controlled left turn at the light.
Around here, it’s common for someone to avoid the inconvenient rules and when they almost hit you, they follow up with flipping you off as though you did something wrong.

When I was ticketed while riding on my motorcycle in 1971, the citation was labeled "Improper Change of Lane, or Course", as I pulled my bike up to the right side of the car in front of me in the right lane, at the light to turn right (legal in FL.) to look for my wallet, that I thought I dropped earlier that day at a school playground down that street.

I didn`t even think about the traffic violation risk, I was only thinking about finding my wallet (long hair length, and riding a motor cycle, the city LEOs liked to pull over us over and field check out us hippy types" often in that early seventies time frame).

I ended up beating both tickets in court, as the officer had accidently checked the time of infraction box at AM, instead of PM, and my father noticed it while reviewing the citations later that night, after I came home, still looking for my misplaced wallet.

From what I can tell reading various laws is that if there is room to safely go around and stay on the pavement, then it is legal. But I bet the details vary state to state. Maybe if there is a painted white line or not makes a difference?
Anyway, I do it all the time, and most folks around here do. :dunno:

I live in a small town that straddles a freeway used by commuters. The freeway becomes stop and go around 3:30 in the afternoon. Due to that, the commuters have taken to cutting through town to avoid the traffic stoppage. In retaliation, the city timed the main traffic signal so it will only let about three cars through on a green light starting about 4. Commuters, then, cut through parking lots to avoid the light.

Not sure how this will end.:confused:
 
Most municipalities have a statute similar to "avoiding a traffic control device" that they will use if you go through a parking lot to avoid a traffic light or stop sign.

Most also have "no passing on the right" statutes, even if there's no white line.

There are two intersections near me where people routinely pass on the right where cars are stopped at the light going straight and the passing on the right car want's to turn right.

They did some work at one and it looked like they might be putting in a right turn lane. NOPE, they put in a bike lane that no one ever uses (there's only an 18" "bike lane" on the road, but the bike turning lane at the intersection is almost 4 feet wide).

Shortly thereafter a highway patrol officer, on his way to work took to ticketing people passing on the right at that location.
I saw a stop 3-4 out of 5 days for about 2 months!
I knew better, but was late for work and did it----POP.
When I went to pay the ticket, the clerk read it and actually volunteered me a petition to withhold adjudication. I've NEVER even heard of that let alone having the money taker volunteer it.
Anyway, I filled it out and explained on it that dozens if not hundreds of people did this every day and that only recently has a selective enforcement started.
The ticket was dismissed with payment of court costs.
"They" must have been wise to what was going on.
The officer was technically correct, but the circumstances were questionable at least in my opinion.

The ticketing stopped about a week later.

Peeve: coworkers whose standards tend to be low.

I was reassigned a project a coworker had worked on. It involved some compliance checks for a particular type of firewall we use.

The guy that was working on it apparently doesn't know anything about regex, and it shows. Nothing I've reviewed thus far is right. Some of it is laughable.

Some of this stuff is going to take very complex regex to achieve accurate results. It will take time. That's another part of the peeve -- this project sat for months with no activity, but now it's hot because my boss is getting pressure. Since the reports are full of inaccuracies, I have to fix what generates the report, then fix what the report shows.

The people previously involved were happy with simply data in the report - it didn't matter whether it was right or not. It was there and that was good enough for them. It was fine as long as you didn't analyze it.
