What Our Young Athletes Learn From Pro Sports

For clarification, I wish to say that I believe in the wonderful lessons that team sports can teach us.

Didn't mean to smear into the amateur stuff. That certainly benefited me, and many others, I'm sure.

It's the adulation that some of these guys (and gals) get from playing games for ridiculous sums.

THAT is what I don't get. Sorry for rankling anyone.

All is good....that is another thing I gained from sports...tough skin. Because some see no value in sports is no skin off my nose....

I can't tell you how many guys I've seen expounding with vehement certainty about what the Bears or the White Sox need to do, meanwhile having no clue about what they need to do. Guys that can name an entire team roster but don't know who their alderman or state rep is.

Heh heh.

I frequently tune in to local sports talk radio while on the road. Can't tell you how many knuckleheads I heard calling in when I was in Boston recently, talking chapter and verse about what holds up in a court of law. Of course, the NFL CBA is not a court of law, but that didn't seem to deter many people.

bs

I can TOLERATE the last 30 minutes or so of a Football game. About the same w/basketball, a little less w/baseball. If people WANT to get the H3!! knocked outta themselves, More Power to 'em. I was raised on the old "Okey-Doke", believed that sports taught kids teamwork, built Character, yada yads Yada.. Now, I pretty much think THAT might be the BIGGEST whopper of 'em all...

What's your point? Sports make you especially narrow minded and irresponsible? 75% of the AKers who read your post didn't know who their rep or alderman is. Same for at least 75% of the general population.

My point is that a serious interest in big time spectator sports often goes hand in hand with narrow mindedness and civic irresponsibility. I make no claims as to causality.

Those offended by my generalizations are free to consider themselves exceptional; obviously all people who like spectator sports aren't nitwits. Some of my best friends like spectator sports.

Listening to relavent commentary on Overnight America last night, it was said that this was a particularly "dirty" game with no intervention by coaches. The stand-in official attacked had enuff of it and earlier had tossed a couple of the more aggregious offenders out of the game, and a coach on that team had "suggested" retaliation on the ref.

Different strokes for different folks...
I have enjoyed sports for most of my life ,either as a participant ,Coach or spectator.
To make a blanket statement against sports [contact or other] is not wise .

I agree that sports CAN build character ,confidence ,integrity etc. But only if in the right environment - Good support system especially Coaching .
It's very different coaching little league vs HS.vs college vs pro as you move up the ladder the emphasis on winning increases. Pressure on all involved .

Having played many sports & wrestled in college I can say without question I am a better person for it. My 3 children have played many sports & has given them a great perspective on life & reality . Dealing with other people , winning & not - dealing with it either way gracefully .

My youngest daughter had the choice to play college volleyball or play on the club team - she choose the club team - her choice - reasoning was she enjoyed playing but didn't need the pressure to win ... She got it! - had a great time in college her team had lots of FUN & she made friends for life .

Don't forget there are Knuckle heads in every walk of life . We seem to hear more about these NIT WITS than the thousands of well adjusted - contributing to society .

"You were sportsing pretty hard out there."

That's the line that has me laughing out loud here in the office.

OLD HICKORY as an avatar!?? Just when I was getting used to Mr. Tecumseh!
Only President to have our budget in the black, I seem to recall.
And insultingly, after a lifetime of fighting the central bank, he gets slapped on a 20 dollar bill.

Sorry, carry on.

Yeah, old Andy was a pistol, just ask Dickinson.:-) If it weren't for Jackson I might've had to become a Spaniard to move down to Florida.

In his old age he said there were two things he regretted having not done--horsewhipping Henry Clay and hanging John Calhoun. I agree.

And laid the groundwork for the genocidal actions against some of my ancestors.

Most Americans cannot name their local councilmen or state senator because they do not impact their lives as much as their Congressperson or Senator, or President. You have just expounded what everyone who has taken Poly Sci 101 has learned and already forgotten. The maxim does not apply to just people who love to recite the roster of their favorite teams it applies to all of us.

Jackson defeated the hostile Creeks and the Seminoles, betrayed those Creeks who helped him defeat the Red Sticks and ran many of the eastern Indians west but that doesn't qualify as genocide, not in the Hitlerian sense. He didn't want to exterminate the Indians, he just wanted to break their political power and take their land, just like every other American President from Washington to McKinley. Our greatest Indian war, the Old Northwest War, was fought under Washington but for some reason Jackson is the sin eater.

Hell, Jackson hated the British a lot more than he hated Indians. No friend of the Spanish either. Hell, he hated anyone who stood in the way of The United States--Indian, Brit, Spaniard, Whig, banker or secessionist.
