What's the most coherent sounding 2-way speakers you've ever heard ?

I have to agree with many of you, I have the original EPI 100 and have always thought they sounded very neutral. My audio mentor turned me onto them in the 70's and I've had them since.

Also vote for Altec Valencias and Big Reds, although the BRs need to be a foot off the floor in my room to be coherent. My newly discovered Tangent TM-3 are very nice as well, KEF B200 and T27 components and a well designed xover. If you don't mind missing the bottom octave the Proac Tablettes have been a fav of mine for years.

Whoever designed these two vintage speaker systems did an excellent job of making sure they were a perfect match to each other . What are some of the most coherent sounding 2-way speakers you've heard from the vintage era ? You would think modern speakers would dust vintage speakers on this aspect but I've found it not to be the case .

I agree with you on the Dynaco A25's (I've never heard the EPI-100's, sorry to say). I had 4 larger Advents that I stacked with the top ones upside down, to create a mid-range, then wired the two pairs in series. I paid $115 apiece for them in 1975, and they were some of the best damned speakers I've ever heard. The Dynaco A25's were their very strong rival. My apartment manager lived across the hall from me when I first got the Advents (1975), and she had 2 Dynaco's. They were impressive. If I found 4 re-conditioned ones today, I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

And I agree with you about modern vs. vintage speakers.
 
I heard some Thiel two-way speakers- I *think* the model was 04a- a long time ago that sounded what I'd call "coherent".
They and that sound are filed away in the back of my mind.
 
My matched L-R 222L 2-ways speakers below (DIY), with a Monacor SPH-170 PP Mid-Woofer and DT-280 Silk dome Tweeter are rather good in terms of coherence :

By coherence, I personally mean a fine speaker blend, tone balance and transient synchronisation, giving for example male voice fullness and articulation, neat percussive instruments attack/decay/release/sustain, etc... In other words, the two speakers works together accordingly.

I have found the serial 6dB crossover to concurr to that performance of blend, tone balance and synchronisation, with a FC at circa 4500Hz :

Apogee Centaurus Slant 6. It’s amazing to me that the marriage of a lengthy ribbon and a 6.5” woofer could produce such a coherent sound. Too bad the low bass is so flabby, but asking a small woofer driver to hit 32Hz at a good volume has its costs.

On the other hand, the least coherent speakers I’ve owned were JBL L20T.
