What's the most coherent sounding 2-way speakers you've ever heard ?

I agree with the Thiel 04a though I had the 04 which had a passive radiator. I at this time am using Fried Q/3 which do it for me.

Just recently I heard the Klipsch Jubilee using a time aligned electronic crossover to make the bass corn and HF horn match up and in that respect the sound produced is quite remarkable. But the Speaker should be place in a corner like the Klipsch horn to get the smoothest over all response and used with the latest electronics.

The new La Scala coming out net year with new Horns and a ported LF horn combination comes with passive networks. But you can add an electronic crossover and Tri amp the speaker to get coherent sound reproduction. That should be a very big improvement for the LaScala. With that technology they should bring back the Belle in my opinion.

The first coherent speakers I heard, tho 5-way, I recall were the Dahlquist DQ-10, any number of Canadian two-ways apply, like the Mirage 360.

Of what I've heard, I agree with the Time Window, and A/D/S mentions. Spica TC50's as well. Of what I own, my Martin Logan EM-ESL's, and Meyer Sound HD-1's.

Well, this thread sure has been a futile experiment, the two way speaker design has been around for what seems like forever. And who knows just how many companies have produced them globally. As usual whatever one has is the best. So trivial, that said, I can share my own experiences with a variety of "Coherent" 2 way designs.

ADS L620, a 10" woofer, large cabinet, featuring a Ferro fluid tweeter, and excellent crossover design.

JBL L46, A mid sized bookshelf, very well balanced.
.
Peachtree Audio D5-got my attention after discovering they were designed by Dr. Michael Kelly of Aerial Acoustics. formerly at ADS, an affordable option for those on a buðget.

ADS-520, Lots of fans of this speaker, in fact all the 2 way ADS are special, yet this model has all the frequencies covered. Any thing featuring Linkwitz- Riley Today, the de facto standard for professional audio active crossovers is the 4th-order Linkwitz-Riley (LR-4) design.

If you had to compile a list of the most coherent sounding 2-way loudspeakers you've ever heard what would it consist of ? My list is very short and includes two speaker systems that I currently own , Dynaco a25 and EPI-100 . I've found that even most modern hi fi loudspeakers don't blend and mesh the way the drivers in these speakers do . You seem to always be aware of the tweeter sticking out like a sore thumb or not blending like it should . Give these speakers a nicely recorded jazz lp or CD and they are seamless . Whoever designed these two vintage speaker systems did an excellent job of making sure they were a perfect match to each other . What are some of the most coherent sounding 2-way speakers you've heard from the vintage era ? You would think modern speakers would dust vintage speakers on this aspect but I've found it not to be the case .

I've owned a pair of KLH Model 6s since around 1975. Recapped and refinished several years ago. I've heard new 2-ways that are different and own a couple of other 2-way sets, but never seem to be better in any particular way. Of course, my hearing may now be the limiting factor.:)

The problem with the original poster, is he stated speakers he liked, but didn't state specific brands/models he didn't like. We all hear differently, I'm curious if there's a pair liked by some and hated by others?

That's a tough one. Almost every speaker I've ever owned and own were two ways.
I guess its the Polk Monitor 7 with the Peerless tweeters.
I do really like the Marantz Imperial 6's.
The ADS 570/2's make the list too.
The Polk Monitor 7's are a very well balanced sounding speaker from top to bottom.

Too funny...I was just browsing Audiokarma...don't make it here nearly as often as I used to...and run across this post!

The top picture (of the Beveridge speakers) is my (former) system. Man I went through a lot of gear for about a decade there from 2013-2023.
Beveridges were/are certainly nice!
Never heard KLH 9's, they are bucket list to hear yet.
