What's the most coherent sounding 2-way speakers you've ever heard ?

Hrmm... B&W Silver Signatures, Pro Ac Response 2s or 2.5s, any number of Sonus Faber, Totem and Meadowlarks...

There are a number of small British two-ways designed for the BBC, made by Rogers, Spendor, and others. The Spendor BC 1 was basically a two-way with a super-tweeter. Many variants of this design were made. I find two-ways inevitably compromised in one way or another (coherence, speed, volume: something's got to be sacrificed!). The three-way speaker design is probably the best overall basis for most uses, unless you use a two-way with a subwoofer. But that's cheating, in a sense.

Four-ways are excellent too. Kenwood Model seven.

The famous two-way BBC-designed LS3/5a is enormously coherent, but is heavily coloured, is slow, lacks bass, and cannot be driven very hard. It's great for 'small' music that does not go very deep or very loud.

Much better two-ways than those old LS3/5as are now available, but they still suffer compared to three-ways with 300mm woofers:

I completely disagree.

Have a listen to a fullrange.

The more drivers there are, the more power they can handle and the greater the dynamic range they can produce. I have never heard a full-range dynamic speaker that was any good. Two-ways are severely compromised as it is, and I cannot fathom a full-range sounding any good at all.

That is not true.

Components of a multi way system's power handling are not cumulative.

Yes, it is true. Each driver has a voice coil, and only so much current can flow through a coil before it overheats (all other things being equal, of course). If there are three or four coils, the system can handle more current. This is basic physics. Big woofer coils take the brunt of it of course, and that is why two-ways with small woofers are so delicate.

There are a lot of nice speakers mentioned here, but I'll add a few more.
Genesis 1+, 2+ and 210, original small Advents, and B&W DM17.

I've been playing with some JBL LE14C coaxials lately, and they have a very nice presentation of vocals.

+1 on the Genesis

i own the Genesis II+ and they sound great! just not as good as my altecs which are very coherent. my favorite 2-way is the altec A2 or A4 though. i have been searching high and low for a pair ever since i heard them...so dreamy  but for speakers that i can actually find/afford i liked the Genesis and a Pair of Advent Legacy II's that i had a while back. they sounded really nice

Kef LS-50.

Concentric/coaxial tweeter and woofer. Sounds like one driver. Images like one driver. Very nice.

Track down the KRK Expose E8B.

The best Front-End that you can muster with it. :thmbsp:

Cizek Model Ones

I'd have to say that the Cizek Model Ones are bout the most coherent 2 ways that I have listened to.

Very neutral sound, full spectrum, sweet mids, tight bass and highs that are as sharp as a razor but don't cut.

Need to be heard speakers if ever there were.

Cheers

I can't say I've ever heard a pair of speakers where I felt everything was hitting my ear at the same time. I could always tell where the tweeter was. Now, ribbon drivers. Those things are amazing. I first heard a pair of ribbon drivers at medium sized venue when my friend was running sound for a band,(I know, not home audio) the highs were not harsh, just smooth undistorted clarity. It was great. And this was at 105 or so DB.

Other than that, tweeters are never balanced enough for me.

Lots of mentions for the Dynaco A25s:thmbsp:,,I don't have them (would love too though) but I do have a set of A35s and they do their job flawlessly in pretty much any musical situation. I've owned these speakers for quite a while and have been listening to these particular ones since my dad bought them new back in the early 70s.:D
