I know nothing about surfing, and less about Australia. But, I have a friend that lived in Surfers Paradise, wherever it may be, for a year....:smoke:

'Surfer's'(as it's known)is about 200 miles from where I live.

Without giving away exactly where I live....this is the general region,known as 'The Sunshine Coast'

The pictures I posted earlier are from a suburb of Sydney(which I can't name, because the locals would beat me to death for revealing how good the surf is there. :D)
 
i would be a surfer if i lived near surf, but since i live in oak cliff, texas, and the only bodies of water are the trinity river and white rock lake, i have to go without. summer of 1970 i lived in hawaii, and we were at the breaks every evening....and saturday and sunday mornings. thanx for the photos theo.

Cool down under thunder! Nice breaks. I surfed when I was younger and in Florida but the waves there are small until a hurricane then you get the 14+ footers.
 
I dabbled in surfing for awhile until distance from the shore (2.5 hours on a good day) and marriage, in that order, motivated me to sell my longboard.

I surfed both the Atlantic and the Pacific, but NEVER took on anything like your pictures. Out of my league. Great shots.
 
You've got some beautiful water downunder theo.
The largest waves I've ever been in here in the Atlantic off Long Island were 10 feet high, and that was when there was a hurricane out in the middle of the ocean.

Most of those photos of the surf are of the same break.The Lefts are all the same place except the one which is in my avatar,and the clean shot of two smallish lefts.
The right-hander with the guy doing a bottom-turn is the Local point break,and the really hollow right-hander that the body boarders are riding,are all in the same basic vicinity as the left-hander.
None of the shots are from other Sydney beach suburbs.This place is packed with world-class(heavy)waves.
I don't live there anymore. :tears:
The Sunshine Coast(where I live now) is generally knee high waves.It has one super excellent set-up called Noosa Heads,which faces North and therefore misses the predominant Southerly swells.
When it gets a good swell with a bit of North in it,Noosa looks like this:

Great pics by all and I always liked Theo's avatar..Reminds me of "The "Endless Summer". I saw these in Hawaii years ago and couldn't believe my eyes. Won't find anything like that in New Jersey through Maryland except maybe August and September....I'm just an avid swimmer...the bigger the better.

There is a whole crew of guys that surf the Great Lakes. A little to cold for me. http://www.greatlakesurfing.com. I had to stop surfing in the winter, the cold was starting to affect my hearing, even with ear plugs and a hood.

I do most of my surfing in Santa Cruz up to Pacifica. Maverick's is along the way and way to big for my skills.

When I visit my dad in Hawaii, I surf smaller North Shore waves. Peahi or Jaws is only 30 minutes away and it gets crazy big. I also surf stretches up to Lahaina on the other side of the island. Lahaina can be touristy but on a nice day can be pretty fun. The water is gin clear you can see the reef and fish only a couple below. When on Oahu I surf couple of spots on the South Shore. Waikiki even with the hordes is a fun mellow kinda spot.

Ditto. My sister lives on Oahu. I have a longboard there that she keeps for me. The North Shore in January is amazing (even if just for the bikinis since I won't touch that big surf).

I will surf at the Outer Banks in NC and I hope my son gets into it. He seems to "get" the whole rhythm of the waves.
