Which Jefferson? Airplane or Starship?

I like a few JA songs alot, the way the tension builds in JA's version of "White Rabbit" is a high point, but I like more JS songs, some of which are sublime. As far as I know, I don't like any Starship songs.

While Jefferson Starship had its moments early on, for me it's Jefferson Airplane all the way - the first group I truly obsessed about. After the split, I found Hot Tuna a lot more interesting than most all of the Jefferson Starship releases.

What a great album, what a great concept, and what an amazing bunch on musicians played on that one - it was special!

I saw an early Starship tour with Chaquico too - circa 1974 I think!

We could get a whole thread going about PERRO and David and the Dorks and all the various iterations of the folks who hung out at Wally Heider's Studio - and the albums that came from that Group - Blows was the most notable - but there were others!

But in truth, I love 30 seconds over Winterland, Sunfighter, Baron Von Tollboth and a bunch of other recordings around that period .. yes, even Bark!

...because "Blows Against The Empire" wasn't a Starship album. It was a Paul Kantner/Grace Slick solo album with a helluva supporting cast.

Airplane: Pot and acid.

Starship: Pot, coke and meth.
 
I'm not a huge fan, but I would go with Airplane. I like Hot Tuna more, myself.
Also, a city built on rock and roll would be structurally unsound.:yes:

Okay...what was the group that did "Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome nun"?

I don't think it actually says "Jefferson Starship" on the LP. But it ain't Airplane, and it is a heck of a great album.

Some of the songs on "Blows Against The Empire" were also spectacular, and it was a "non Airplane" group, too. Trying to think if "Blows" did say "Starship"...???

I dunno! I think Blows DID say "Jefferson Starship" on the cover (but I am at work and don't have it here in front of me) <G>.

Actually, Grace had many more problems with that lovely drug that society embraces: ALCOHOL, than she did with the illegals...

And I think Meth is a Johnny-come-lately drug. A decade or two after these folks were a big deal.

It said Starship alright, but that wasn't a group. The group later took its name from this album.
 
I prefer the Airplane, but the only time I saw any incarnation of the band was the "Dragonfly" tour by Jefferson Starship. it really was pretty good.

The last LP I bought new was Spitfire, which I apparently no longer have; maybe it's over in the "For Sale" boxes. FWIW, most of the Jefferson Starship/Starship LPs are regulars in the buck bins at record shops; not so with JA stuff. OK, maybe "Bark".

BTW, saw Mickey Thomas with Elvin Bishop in their heyday. :yes:

Ok, you go ahead and think that if you want, but it didn't say Airplane on it anywhere and it did say "Jefferson Starship." Yes, the people who were on it were an all star cast that are not on the newer Starship albums, but that doesn't make it not Starship, IMO.
