Which Jefferson? Airplane or Starship?

I prefer the Airplane, but the only time I saw any incarnation of the band was the "Dragonfly" tour by Jefferson Starship. it really was pretty good.

Was this the tour with Peter Kaukonen on bass in 74?

One of the best shows I ever saw. :smoke:

Papa John, Pete, Freiberg and Barbata along with Slick and Kantner. It was as good as it sounds.

Saw a great show back in the day .. Heart opening for Jefferson Starship in the old Milwaukee Auditorium.

Also saw Mickey Thomas with Elvin Bishop opening for Lynyrd Synyrd at the Milwaukee PAC. One of the last rock shows there. The Kiss fans ripped out seats, so no more rock in the venue.

Ok, you go ahead and think that if you want, but it didn't say Airplane on it anywhere and it did say "Jefferson Starship." Yes, the people who were on it were an all star cast that are not on the newer Starship albums, but that doesn't make it not Starship, IMO.

ok, let me straighten this out for you guys, it was a Kantner solo project

He called the band (that accompanied him) the Starship.

Jerry, Crosby and Nash were all part of the project.

Jorma was not, Jack was. Of course Slick was in.

I'm sure that was the lineup when I saw them.

Have you seen Grace lately? She and I have the same hair style/color/length. LMAO. I think she is still pretty good looking.

Yeah but to be fair, you have seen about everybody that has ever toured.

I think it was Pete Sears on bass and Craig Chaquito for sure on lead. Papa John was really good though. i think I snagged a copy of his first LP from that period recently; played it a LOT back in the day.

Along with "First Pull up, then pull down" which is going on the TT in about 15 seconds

Papa John was always great. I shook his hand at one show. Also spoke w/Jack & Jorma. They were always friendly with their fans.

Correct. The spine of the Album says "Blows Against The Empire - Paul Kantner."

The spine of my album says: "Blows Against The Empire - Paul Kantner Jefferson Starship."
So I stand corrected, I think.:scratch2:

I might as well chime in on this too. As much as I like the Airplane, I love Marty Balins Starship music. So I gotta vote for the JS.

To many memories

of the cultural expression that Jefferson Airplane laid @ the steps of the Status Quo of the 70's. As Bob Dylan said the times they were a changin and the sound out of San Francisco was Gabrial playing his horn. It always made me wonder what the people in Washington were afraid of but The Jefferson Airplane and other bands out of the bay area were looking for change and bringing the message that one day there will be more of us than there are of you.
So many great albums by the Airplane , where to start.
The Jefferson Airplane for me,not to mention that people like Crosby,Garcia,Nash and many others sat in on alot of these early recordings, kind of like a Music communal thing.

It's hard for me to find another American Rock band that is more important or vital to the times from which they sprang as the Airplane. As I've grown older I have come to the opinion, just mine mind you, that the Airplane were the most important, best and unique American Rock band ever. Starship stuff, even with the occasional great tune was pretty aimless in comparison. In the 60's, Jefferson Airplane was at the heart of it all!
