Why are us "cable believers" made to defend our position so often?

I haven't ventured into the most recent 'cable believers' thread, so I can't comment on what's going on inside that one. However, I don't really see a huge number of threads that start off discussing the nuances between high end cables, what I see most often is people coming in and asking "which cables should I be using". In those threads, I don't see that the cable advocates as having any more rights of ownership over opinions expressed in the thread as the non cable advocates.

As for the debate progressing, I'm curious what you mean? Do you mean it hasn't progressed in that you don't sense the 'intransigents' moving towards your position, or that nobody has offered up an argument convincing enough to move you towards their position?

If it's any consolation, I've tried to keep an open mind, and I personally have moved my stance from what it probably was 3-4 years ago. I've certainly been more of a skeptic (intransigent?) in these debates, but I have absolutely learned quite a bit about how things like shielding, external noise, etc, can affect things. And I'm open to learning more.

I do find it curious that if there is a problem with lack of progress, it's always because the other side hasn't gotten it.

Let's also keep in mind that TOL is a different forum with different rules and standards than the rest.

How about this way of looking at it: does it really matter? How did all of us get to the point where the wires connecting our music-makers are making us dislike each other? I mean, I've been as hot headed as anybody and for what?

Have you ever stepped out of the place you've gotten to in the hobby and thought, "what the hell am I doing? All this money, expense, fighting, bickering, this camp, that camp, over a stereo? Are we really that settled in our lives, that this has become the big issue? THIS ...cables....is the thing to be passionate about? Stop the ride, I want to get off.

We (and I emphasize we, including myself) have become this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeS4tVFbNNk&feature=related

"For cryin' out loud, its just a stereo."

(but wait 'till Shatner shows up. Its worth it).

..........and yet named it "Thinking Out Loud" instead of "Cable Discussions". The forum name itself probably seduces many who haven't read the posting rules for this forum into assuming that it is a forum for sharing your thoughts in an open way rather than what it actually is.

".

That's because it is not just about cables. It is about cables, tweaks, rack, etc.

It's funny that you say it is not about sharing your thoughts in an open way. That's exactly what it is for. It was created as place where people who wanted to discuss this like sonic differences in cables could actually do so without it turning into a flame war. Before TOL, EVERY thread on cables or tweaks turned into a mocking and flaming session. If anyone even dared suggest they heard a difference in cables, or paid good money for anything more than the patch cords that manufacturers included with their gear, the "measurements posse" or the "anti-cable flame gang" would do their best to run them out of town.

Usually, The only people who seem to complain about the rules of TOL are those who either have no real interest in the topic, or those who miss out on the opportunity to mock those who believe in them, and prefer to use them.

I have wanted his wand, on occasion....

If you want a magic wand here you go. This one is a fully programmable remote control to use it you wave it just like a magic wand and the way you move it is how it commands your devices  Just think how cool it would be to walk into your mancave and with a wave of your magic wand bring everything to life. If you have any Harry Potter fans in the family They will act like a a nest of Welsh Pixies in excitement. You can purchase it on Amazon.

I think my question has been answered a couple times already; people perceive a wrong and are compelled to right it. They feel it's their duty. Funny. my question has been answered, but I still don't feel as though I understand that mindset.

Anyway...thanks all for a lively discussion.

I think if you go to the thread about the '67 Corvette in the "Wheels" forum, and read YOUR post, you may have your answer.:thmbsp::D
That was humor--done only for a laugh. I understand people's love for old American muscle cars. I grew up with a whole succession of them in my family.

I think that's false, and that you actually meant Audio Asylum; which I would agree in that case is true.
No, I meant Audioholics. That's a very hostile environment for anyone who claims that cables affect the sound of a system. Audio Asylum is pretty accommodating IME.

If you're 40lbs lighter now, stay indoors when the breeze hits anything over 30mph.

40 lbs lighter puts me at 210 lbs (and weight training for the last 6 mos). That would have to be one hell of a wind! A year earlier I weighed 20 lbs more.

Now to the cable altar to pray...

I don't think it's necessary to dump people in categories or overanalyze the motivations. People just have different beliefs and opinions.

The danger is we categorize them into our own subjective buckets just so we can make sense of our world view. So we arbitrarily make things up in terms we can understand. After all, how can they possibly not think like me? There must be something wrong with them.

  • They perceive a wrong and need to right it.
  • They feel it's their duty.

I mean what compels you to post this thread? The other side could point the same finger:

Do you perceive a wrong and need to right it - or just to be heard?
Do you think others should bite the tongue like you?

Debates could be no more than exchanging ideas. To be heard. To say, "Wait a minute, here's my take." Where it goes awry is when people take it personally and start attacking, characterizing and dismissing others instead of discussing the issues.

If you read some of the posts, there are those who sincerely believe their position but still acknowledge it's ok for cable believers to believe. We just pay more attention to those who we can't convince or have no comeback for.

Ah, well, I responded from my POV since it seemed you were replying to me. Regardless, we're on the same page about the flavor of those two, even though our perspectives of which is hostile and which is accomodating are essentially polar opposite.
