Why does does hip-hop get such a bad rap?

As a young man who was coming of age when rap came on the scene, I was put back the first time I heard Anthraxs' "I am the Man."
Wicked.
At the time, I was into the metal scene and for something like this to come about was, to say the least, a trip.
Actually liked it.
Who knew?
Anyway, as my kids have become teens and are listening to this newer stuff, i'm now scared.
For them and for myself.
I guess it's the natural progression of life.
Don't really like it, but what ya gonna do?
I'm sure, nooo...I know, my parents were conserned about me.
My Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, ect....were not wildly accepted in my household.
Although, somehow,I turned out half-way decent.
Knock on wood.
Funny story.
One day on the way to the mall, my friend gave me the new Metallica Master of Puppets tape to put into the deck of my moms' car.
She totally enjoyed the intro to Damage Inc.....
Who wouldn't?
But that was about it.
Right directly thereafter, out came the Metallica and in went her "Kitaro"....sigh.
Sign of the times.
As far as content goes.
Hmmmph.
Nothing new.
One of my favorite tapes back in the day was the original 2 Live Crew.
Stop and listen to those lyrics for a minute.
Sheesh.

With that in mind, like I said, my thoughts have changed, my music preference has evolved, and I look back upon thoses years in my life without regrets.
We all choose avenues by which to separate ourselves from the pattern of our parents behavour.
Natural progression.
As a parent, your not suppose to like it.
As a youth, you have a certain obligation to.
IMO.
Obviously, there are alot of other mitigating factors involved in the nature of the genres' evolution.
But it's truly all just symantics
My thoughts are simple.
When it comes to your music...
Love it or leave it, but never disregard it without clear introspection.
If you truly understandstand it from an objective perspective then you can decide to completely omit it, or accept it, in your life.
Just remember, my friends young and old.
We are always in a state of change, never static.
What may be disliked today, might find its' way into your heart tomorrow.
You never know.
Keep an open mind.
Life's too short not to.

Because of rap music, I got put on to GOOD MUSIC.
Rap music put alot of youngsters on to legends and good music.
Through rap music I finally realized how HUGE James Brown catalog is. It's so big, that owning ALL of his music is not possible. GOOD music at that.
A Tribe Called Quest put ME on to old jazz swingin music and beep bop.
THEN you have rap bands like The Roots.
Digital Underground...fun rap that was a pleasure to listen too, because the sampled so much of George Clinton.

Rap ICON like LL Cool J. 40 years old and still doing his thing.
The rapper Scarface was on MTV cribs boasting his Pink Floyd box set.
In a magazine he was talking about what he did a few years ago that he ALWAYS wanted to do as a kid. his dream finally came true. He attended a KISS concert.

Rap? The best stuff was on tiny independent labels in NY - pre 1983. I was 13 in 1983 and we just couldn't get enought of the next stage - the electro years. Anyone ever heard Streetsounds Electro 1? It's a mixed compilation that was released in the UK in 83 - it changed a lot of lives here. Rap ended with Public Enemy for me. All the fun vansihed and everyone was angry - party over. I never paid much attention after that but i still like to collect those late 70's / early 80's records where the rapping was basic, it was about bring your neighbourhood together to party and the disco bands played Chic basslines... and it all really captured a moment.
There has been a lot of R E A L L Y good, inventive, creative, underground and mainly instrumental Hip Hop out over the past couple of years.

Agreed, sampling is part if the puzzle. And they find these gems from the 70's and 60's that most never knew exsited..My favorite treo was the O'Jays. Because of rap, NOW my favorite treo is The Moments! Horribly underrated R&B group that released some gems in the 70's that got overshadowed by mainstream R&B. Rap music samples pulled their music out and it's exposed now.

You can find negative lyrics in any genre of music (those that have lyrics any way) whether it's country, hip hop, metal, pop, whatever.
My favorite hip hop artists are Saul Williams and Black Star, Jurassic 5 and The Roots are also good.

It makes you wonder what he would have thought of hip-hop.
I guess I fall into the category of not liking it because of the way it sounds. I pretty much just ignored (like all the other music I don't care for) it until it started to take over a few years ago. It seems like most bars and clubs are almost exclusively hip-hop now. I guess I know how people who hate techno felt a few years ago...

People either love or hate techno.
Most people only hear a few songs of techno and if they don't like it they say they hate the whole genre.
In fact there are some great techno artists out there - one of my favs is Orbital.
I also think that people get trance and techno confused.
I can't really say I hate any genre of music. I'll give anything a listen. I used to be closed minded about music when I was a teenager, but now I enjoy genre's of music I used to say I hated. Now, I'm not saying I love all music, I just prefer to listen to certain types more than others.
