Why don't people use their car's Turn signals??

The driving Seven Dwarves:Impulsive, Lazy, Forgetful, Swervers, Ostriches, Followers, and the Dare Devils.

"We don't need no stinkin' turn signals" :pistols: , or maybe it's like out here in SoCal - the moment you turn on your signal, the idiot in the lane you want to move into speeds up. It's the ole "I can't let somebody get ahead of me Syndrome".

Me, I'm still dumb enough to turn it on and wait to move over (usually 5-10 miles ahead of my exit). I almost always get over in time.

13) Pollution. Using the turn signal uses power from the battery, which in turn makes the alternator work harder. When the alternator is charging, it robs valuable horsepower from the engine, which must use more gasoline in order to produce that horsepower. Using more gasoline produces exhaust which pollutes. Also, as batteries are charging, they emit fumes which also pollute. Therefore, by not using my turn signal, I am providing a better environment for you and me.

You're welcome.

That's so logical, Bentpencil. Maybe we should all just stop using our signals and help save the planet. There's gotta be statistics out there somewhere. Al Gore would be so proud.

The next time I'm cut off by someone with no advanced notice I'll think of how altruistic that driver is.

thanks. It doesn't get any better than that!

I have experienced idiots "closing the gap" in the lane I have signalled my intention to merge into many a time. These same yahoos will merge into your lane without signalling if you leave nore than a 3/4 car length gap between you and the vehicle in from of you, even though your lane isn't moving any faster.

Years ago I recorded some spine tingling sound effects onto an 8-track and piped it out the twin PA horns in the front of my 63 Galaxy. When someone cut me off they'd hear 18 squeeling tires, air brakes and a frantic air horn symphony.

I believe I generated a fair amount of upholstery cleaning business on the Chicago area expressways in that era.

Here in Maryland and Virginia when you do turn on your signal to indicate a lane change, the SOB in the other lane speeds up so you can't move over. Since I got the Impala I do signal the lane change, and then blow the SOB's doors off.:D

it's so bad and with so many blatently ticketable offences accepted as routine, that i've often wondered why they don't produce a series of PSA commercials on tv..ok here's how you are supposed drive a car, covering various routine things like lane use, intersections, turn signals etc..i would imagine if you learned to drive here you could quite possibly have NO idea what was and wasn't normal behaviour on most roads

I've often wondered the same thing. Now that would be a good and productive use of the boob tube!
We all get some bad habits the longer we drive but just a refresher course on the basics would be good.

Along the same lines, I've always thought that a basic Physics course (I mean really basic) should be offered just to initiate new drivers in things like the force of a two ton object accelerating at 60mph plus, and what happens when it meets an imoveable object! Just basic stuff like that.

.....so his excuse is basically: "My time is more important than yours"?

Oh ya, one of my pet peeves also!

What would I say would be a good reason NOT to use turn signals:

Well, I know where I'M going! Don't you know where I'M going? I'M the only one on the road anyway so why do you have to know where I'M going?

(Sorry, can't think of any real reason other than laziness as mentioned and maybe just plain "don't care attitude".)
AMEN to that!

Let's be direct/blunt in realizing that there are many people that are simply idiotic/stupid/selfish/lazy/irresponsible. There seems to be a greater percentage of the population that fits this description. Hopefully future vehicles with data recorders will make these morons pay if their non use of turn signal indicators causes accidents.
Another AMEN!

Yea it pisses me off to no end. Its requires virtually no effort and can avoid so much mayhem.
It's such a simple thing, yet so many just don't grasp the concept.

And when you're at a stop sign waiting for traffic to clear and the genius coming down the road flips on his signal just as he is turning...man, that irks me! I mean, why bother?
We call them "has-been-turned" signals, just in case you cant figure out what I have been doing since I started to make this turn.

This is a great thread. I am so glad that so many others are irritated by the inconsiderate, self-absorbed, morons that think that they are too good to follow the rules of the road, and the law, as well as to adhere to any sense of order in this chaotic world that we all live in together.

Not to side track the point of this thread but while comments are being posted, have you observed that there is a particular make of vehicle that stands out in your mind as being more likely to be driven by someone that fails to use their turn signals substantially more often than other makes of vehicles?

Absolutely, Ultra-hog: Pick up trucks, Escalades, Cadillacs, and large SUV's. (Like Navigators). I've also noticed that any model of Jeep, and Honda Odyssey drivers are pretty much clueless.

Don't know for what reason.

How about you? Observations?

Everyone should just drive in straight lines.

What's worse is people who drive around with burnt out lights. Working brake lights are...well....sorta important.

yeah i've always thought along the same lines.not only basic physics, but basic mechanics as well...i'm not saying you should have to learn how to overhaul and/or repair your own car in order to drive one,but i think everyone should have at least a basic understanding of how it works and what they're actually doing when operating a car...this would obviously pay off for the driver/consumer as well, you would at least be able to have a intelligent conversation with your mechanic and probably need their services less, since you would be more aware of the need for basic maintenence etc

Same here in Detroit, most of the time its women that speed up so you cant change lanes.

Ive been to alot of different states for my work & the women drivers in the burbs of Detroit(Bloomfield Hills) are the most self absorbed a-holes ive seen to date.

Ever notice that as the value of the car goes up, the lack of use of the signal lights increases? I always use mine and like the new ones on the mirrors. I think it is laziness and also that they might not have a hand free to push the lever. I had a coffee cup for the car that said, "one hand holding a cell phone the other a cup of coffee, who the hell is steering?"

I think the Cadillac Owners Manual has a sentence that reads: You Are Exempt From Common Courtesy.

Not to flame caddy drivers. Or Cadillac. They make one of the best American cars. Some of the drivers, however, are a little bit, er, 'distracted'.

I think we have a law against them here. Hey, if Manhattan can have a "no honking" law, the rest of the metro area can have a "no blinker" law.

I think we also have a law that requires people to blindly pull into oncoming traffic. No using blinkers then, either.
