Why don't people use their car's Turn signals??

Thank you GaryP....

Man, you guys have it all wrong!

For Sale: 2002 Car, well maintained, mechanically perfect, turn signals never used (brand new!) Only $14,500.00!

There ya go... makes perfect sense to me. :smoke:

I thought my OP was totally our of control. I've been gone for a day, and look what happens!:D

that's dangerous, you know

I used to have a Toyota 4X4 with a roll bar with 4 KC Daylighters 2 pointed front 2 pointed rear on seperate switches (all 4 on at once would practically kill the alternator 15amps each). If someone came up behind me with their highbeams on they'd get a flash if they didn't dim they'd get full blast instant daylight. That got their attention, you could see the beams for miles, 1.5 million candlepower each.

Flashing those Daylighters into someones eyes could easily cause a wreck. Especially at night! The guy behind you might be an asshole, but you are being a dangerous asshole.

I've been away for a day, so this is the latest post I've read. I'll bet we'll find similar responses.

Man, don't go over the top like that. That's very irresponsible.

Just some advice from a fellow AKer.

flash to pass?? since when did ANYONE respond to that!

i find people seem to think you're being a dick..flashin his highbeams in my mirror whats up with that guy?i know...i'll slow down and get even with him!!

i gotta say folks regardless of your intent, flashin lights at people behind you, slowing down, blocking people from passing etc....is all bad driving,it don't matter what the guy behind you is doing,or how bad thier driving habits are...just let them by and be rid of them.unless you're wearing a badge it's not your job to enforce any traffic laws or teach anyone a lesson,in most cases you're just gonna piss somebody off and what you're doing is just as bad as ANYTHING they might be up too,and while they may or may not be aware of thier actions...you're intentionally being a bad driver

If a driver tailgates me on the interstate I may mess with him 'just a little' and block him in for being rude and careless. Passive aggressive punishment on my behalf. I would only act this way if the driver was tailgating in a situation where I was in the left lane to pass a truck or slower car and the tailgating idiot didn't give me a chance to complete my action. It also depends on the tailgaters attitude: If it's some punk in his souped-up Cavalier, with his hat backwards, well, it's time for a little lesson in social behavior.

But if a car behind me flashes his high beams I move over asap. It's a signal that I understand, and I take it as a request; "Please get out of my way, I'm trying to get a speeding ticket, here".

The reward for getting out of the way is to see the car pulled over by a State Trooper a little later. I give an appreciative 'honk' in those cases.

You're not from around here, are ya?

I guess if other drivers were generally nicer my attitude would change but when you run into this shiite several times a day, day-in and day out, one develops a bit of a defense mechanisim to pass some of the anger back to the cause.

I do. I always did.

It was taught when I started driving (in the 60's) that that's the polite way one indicates they want to pass.

Granted, there are some drivers that ignore that but that's another issue. They are simply dicks, but it's always been customary to flash when you want to pass, not simply ride up on someone's ass and leep the high beams on. If they do that, they take a nice slow ride as I coast down until I reach a safe place to pull over, and I'm not a slow driver.

If they are truly obnoxious, I might take subtle measures to block them in for a bit.

But, please note that I don't slam on the brakes. If it's daylight, I may put my tail lights on for a second or so, but that's another story.

the funny thing is...

MarkW: I'd like to see some of these dudes driving in Europe. Especially on the Autobahn.
.. .that when I drive in Texas and other states away from the NE, my driving attitude is totally different. I don't NEED to be agressive. I can be mellow, polite and not have any problems because they tend to drive in a more "civilized" manner. ...and I feel freeto use my directionals.

Well, they say this area of the country has the highest population density, but I'm not too sure they are only referring to people/square mile ratio. :scratch2:

It just occured to me, maybe they have yet to read the owner's manual and don't even know what a turn signal is. I remember a co-worker many moons ago telling me about his uncle. They were out driving at night and the uncle was complaining about all the oncoming drivers flashing their lights. Turned out the old man had his high beams on and was not aware of how to change them. Then there was the time I flashed mine at an oncoming driver who had his on high. Damn near drove off the road I was laughing so hard - when he switched, one lamp went down, the other went up looking for helicopters, he had installed a sealed beam upside down.:D

Yeah I know, this was 20 years ago when I was young and didn't give a shite.
In my defense though the truck was tall the bottom of the light was 7' off the ground and they were pointed straight level and they got the briefest flash, if they were riding my bumper.

As for the orig. purpose of this thread the no turn sig I hate the most, is when they fly past you cut in front THEN signal, nail the brakes and turn off.

Well, I've been there, too

I did a lot of stupid stuff too, I guess. Just passing on some advice from my experience, but you seem aware. (20 years ago it was less likely that someone was carrying heat.)

I don't know if it's because the world has changed, or if I've just mellowed out in my old age. I did a few things that would be embarassing back then.

When I was consulting for DISA I used to drive to Ft. Monmouth as it was easier than flying from BWI to Newark, rent a car, etc. I was driving a Ford Probe at that time and as we got onto the parkway there were a whole bunch of cars huddling together as if expecting an Indian attack. When I saw my chance I broke out of the pack and a young lad seeing this grey haired old man in a Probe pass him, just could not stand it. So he passes me at about 75 and I let him get about a half mile or more ahead. Come to one of those dips and as he is going up the other side I suddenly see a secnd pair of tail lights. I slowed to 55 and as I created the rise I see them both at the side of the road and the bubble gum machine is flashing slowly. I just smiled and went on my way knowing I would be unlikely to see another trooper for many miles.

Seems a lot of Jetta drivers are trying to prove something (like cutting off everyone is a sign that your car and you are superior - maybe it's a case of Beamer envy)

Not all of us. Some of us try to be courteous. I've learned over the years that it's not smart to try to prove something with a 3,000-pound lethal weapon. I use my turn signals faithfully. And what I drive doesn't make me -- or it -- superior to anyone.

And if I wanted a Bimmer (originally, the cars were Bimmers -- rhymes with dimmer -- and the bikes were Beamers), I would have bought one. Still might some day, if I can find a nice old 2002tii.

Where is that in Texas???

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:
Basically anywhere between Corpus Christi, Gainesville, College Station and an occasional jaunt to Plano.

Big cities, which I tend to be able to avoid, like Houston and Dallas, tend to suck, though. What is it, Route 6 in houston that's the main road across and to the airport? Now there I feel right at home and my big city skills snap back into action. I rarely touch Austin and St. Antonio and when I do, it's for pleasure and not at rush hour so they don't get too under my skin.

but, on he whole, the big cities there tend to be spread out and, once past 'em the roads open up. Here in Jersey, traffic can suck for miles and miles on end with no letup.

Somehow I didn't think you meant the DFW area!! :D

I enjoyed reading this thread. I have posted simular gripes on other forums without getting the feedback i read here.
I think its a symtom of a bigger problem though.
My driving habbits were born in the 70`. since then ive watched the evolution of driving because i pretty much drive for a living.
What it really boils down to is a sense of entitlement that has spread throuout society.
It is the "you have no right" to tell me what i should or shouldnt do.
If I want to pull up next to you and shake your car with my 2K stereo i will.
If I dont want you in front of me I`m not letting you in "its my lane"
If I dont want to use my turn signals "thats your problem"
If I want to get through this intersection even if the light turned red 2 cars ago "I will".
If i need to block you in to park OK.."so long as i get to park.
If we come to the intersection at the same time and i`m on the left of you
"its my turn, even if i have to do a rolling stop'
Lots more examples in every part of daily activities, grocery stores,on line auctions, at work , in the schools ect.
Whats worse it isnt going to stop. Its too far gone.
Pending some world disaster where human society has to be rebuilt it will evolve to chaos.
It will do that slowly enough that it goes unoticed, maybe even acceptable,
Except for these tiny symptoms you see in daily life.
Like a cancer it grows on humanity and eventually leads to our demise.
I`m not bitter about it. Heck I`m more dead then alive but I feel sorry for the folks that have to live it.
I can hear them now.
Cheers.
