Why don't people use their car's Turn signals??

Here in southern Colorado I fully understand the turn signal issue. It seems to be one of two things.

A: Hard to use it when your left hand has a cell phone and your trying to text on it.

B: Hard to get to the turn signal when there are 17 people in a mini-van. The other issue this group has is NO understanding of what a 4-way stop is.:scratch2:

And when you're at a stop sign waiting for traffic to clear and the genius coming down the road flips on his signal just as he is turning...man, that irks me! I mean, why bother?

I love the ones on the Interstate that pull into your lane cutting you off and only turn on
their signal when they're half way into the lane!

Ya know, I used to get really pissed over all that stuff. I've trained myself over the last 5 or 6 years not to let it personally affect me. These dildo's are so clueless, or arrogant, that I know it's not personal.

I just wonder how they passed the state driving test.

Absolutely, Ultra-hog: Pick up trucks, Escalades, Cadillacs, and large SUV's. (Like Navigators). I've also noticed that any model of Jeep, and Honda Odyssey drivers are pretty much clueless.

Don't know for what reason.

How about you? Observations?

Those models look like they have turn signals from the outside, but they have actually been omitted. It's amazing that you'd pay so much for the car and they leave out something so basic.

The lack of signal use also indirectly proportional to the speed of the vehicle and directly proportional to the age of the driver.

What really gets my ass chapped is when a STUPID SUV DRIVER just decides that she really needs to get into the space that is between my Escort and the next car, doesn't signal, just nudges herself right in there, nearly taking out my front end.

I firmly believe there should be a psych profile done on new drivers, and every 5 years when one has to renew their license. Oh, and add a IQ test in there as well.

HA!

YOU trust people to actually be turning if they're signal is on, even if they flip it on right as you think they're going to turn?

YIKES!

Round these parts many people don't stop at stop signs, especially if it's a T dead end and they're turning right, just look left as your coming up to the intersection then GO as if it were a green light.

Right of way...car is parked on the road on YOUR side of the road...round here people will floor it past the obstruction in their way and flip off the person who actually has the right of way that honks at them for coming head on at them. If the roads too narrow they'll still go and then get pissed if you don't move over far enough to let them squeeze by what is really only a 2 car wide road(and they want in between that oncoming car and the one parked in front of them).

People suck.

:YOU trust people to actually be turning if they're signal is on, even if they flip it on right as you think they're going to turn?"

No, are you crazy? I'd be an idiot, and suicidal maniac to trust someone driving with a turn signal on. It's a risk. If they give me ample signal-on-time I might take a shot at zipping out into traffic, hoping the 'singalor' is going to slow down before he turns onto the street I'm exiting. Precise timing is critical.

Today I watched some lady in a gold colored Cavalier put her signal on. She drove for almost a mile before turning! I thought she changed her mind about turning and forgot her blinker was on.

"Over-signaling" is almost as dumb as not signaling.

She's probably thinking 'well, if signaling for 50 feet is safe, then signaling for a mile would be a hundred times safer'.

11) the constant clicking is anoying

This is not just a joke - my dad was a Ford service manager in the 50's, and he told me they occasionally got some idiot complaining that the clicking was too loud. Today, it wouldn't matter, cause they're too busy yakking on the phone.

"We don't need no stinkin' turn signals" :pistols: , or maybe it's like out here in SoCal - the moment you turn on your signal, the idiot in the lane you want to move into speeds up. It's the ole "I can't let somebody get ahead of me Syndrome".

Me, I'm still dumb enough to turn it on and wait to move over (usually 5-10 miles ahead of my exit). I almost always get over in time.

Agree completely - Personally, I always try my best to let in someone who signals, I am so grateful to see it and want to encourage it even if the move is abrupt.

When I drove a Mark VII or VIII (Lincoln), I used to wince when I saw other Mark drivers giving the group a bad name with late or non-existent signaling. Kind of the opposite of Groucho Marx's comment about not wanting to join a club that would stoop low enough to admit him!

25 years ago, the car pool had a list of bad driving predictors:

Hat driver - (man) wearing a hat
Cigar driver (smoking a seegar)
Cadillac
Woman driver (shame on us - dropped this one as a lone indicator when we added a woman to the carpool)

Worst case - woman driving a Caddy, wearing a hat, and smoking a seegar! :)

Seems a lot of Jetta drivers are trying to prove something (like cutting off everyone is a sign that your car and you are superior - maybe it's a case of Beamer envy)

in Boston there is an unwritten rule of the road that states that if anyone turns on their signal you are to speed up and not let them in and/or cut them off.

It sounds like we are all pretty much on the same page. Here are a few of my observations but please don't take it personally if you drive one of the vehicles that I mention. Just like old_tv_ nut driving his Lincoln, you just may be the exception to the rule, at least I hope so.

  • Cadillac sedans - I drive a Cadillac. I'm special. Turn signals are for everybody else.
  • Cadillac Escalade drivers - F YOU!
  • Volvo drivers - I don't understand the concept. Besides, there isn't anyone else on the planet besides me. You might have noticed that I was backing up because I missed my exit ramp. I WASN'T even turning yet.
  • Ford pickup truck drivers - Huh, what? I don't need them damn things.
  • BMW drivers - See Cadillac, both versions.
  • Rice Rocket drivers - my car is too fast for you to see the light from my turn signals. I have already changed three lanes and made two turns between the first and second click.
  • VW Beetle drivers - They don't come on this model, do they?
  • Minivan drivers, especially those with "Mom's Taxi" or "Baby on Board" bumper stickers - ooops, my bad. Ya knooooow, ya don't have to use them all the time. Tsk!
  • Honda Ridgeline drivers - Use them all the time, and use them correctly, in advance of any turn, lane change or change of vehicle speed. At least this one does. Sorry if it confuses some of the above drivers.
  • Long time motorcycle riders - see Honda Ridgeline drivers, above. The ones that don't use turn signals usually have other similar bad driving habits and rarely live long enough to become long time motorcycle riders.

I have always used my signals, even now that I am reduced to one hand (temporarily). And to be honest, when I'm settin' in traffic, waiting to pull out, I never trust anyone signalling. I've seen too many people change their mind at the last second, and continue on. It's a common courtesy to use them, but our society sorely lacks common courtesy these days in general.

Good one, Ultra! I'd love to own a Ridgeline, too. An ideal vehicle to me. I've driven a 1989 CRV for the last 5 years and am now a total Honda convert. They come stock with turn signals, too.

Man, you guys have it all wrong!

Just for fun, whether you use them or not, what would you say would be a good reason NOT to?

For Sale: 2002 Car, well maintained, mechanically perfect, turn signals never used (brand new!) Only $14,500.00!

There ya go... makes perfect sense to me. :smoke:

Here in Jersey, it's a part of defensive driving.

I think more accidents could be avoided if people would use their directional signals. Period.

Here in Florida they should offer them as an option at the dealerships. Hardly anybody uses them, it seems. And half the time, if they DO use them, they get it all wrong.

So: Just for fun, whether you use them or not, what would you say would be a good reason NOT to?

I'll go first:

1) I'm trying to eat a Big Mac and talk on the phone

2) Everybody in town knows ME! They know where I'm going so...

3) It's a sign of weakness

4) What's a turn signal?
Why advertise your intent? If "they" don't know where you're going, "they" can't take measures to block you into your current lane. ..and don't think "they" don't.

On a related topic, if someone comes behind me and flashes their high beams, I'll pull over (at the nearest opportunity) and let them by, but if they just pull up on my arse and hang there like a dingleberry, I just take my foot off the gas and coast down until they get the hint.

i don't have a rice rocket but do enjoy a nice little street race from time to time, but even then i use my signals. it is possible to signal and shift!

i hate it when people do that, i usually turn on my rear fog light if they don't pass me first chance they get. those things really burn your eyes at close range.

I used to have a Toyota 4X4 with a roll bar with 4 KC Daylighters 2 pointed front 2 pointed rear on seperate switches (all 4 on at once would practically kill the alternator 15amps each). If someone came up behind me with their highbeams on they'd get a flash if they didn't dim they'd get full blast instant daylight. That got their attention, you could see the beams for miles, 1.5 million candlepower each.
