Why is everyone so against electrolytic caps in crossovers?

I wish it were as basic and as straight forward as you make out.

It is. Different types of capacitors in different speaker crossovers can change the sound one hears. Whether that is a perceived improvement or not cannot be determined by price alone. Simple as that.

Ah, there is no onus on me, I'm not sitting a test, or part of some experiment...I'm relating/sharing my experiences, others like you can do as they please regardless.

You replied to me and appeared to take issue with my logic. Given that, I surmised you had a point to make in refutation of my thesis. If you were merely injecting your experiences, my apologies.

I have never stated that perceived improvement can be determined by price, in any way.

"You replied to me and appeared to take issue with my logic. Given that"

:scratch2: Umm...actually, no, I responded to a post where you quoted me.

See post 159 onwards for a clearer view of that point.

Umm.....Ok

Think I'll bow out anyway, i have to prepare my phono for a comparison against an EAR when it arrives.

Hehe...this means that their will be three ears used in the comparison :)

I'm leaving as well. Best of luck to you, have fun. I mean that sincerely.

OK, thanks, you too :)

I don't think I'll go near the iron, fatigued..... damn insomnia.

more browsing here I think, until I can sleep.

As some of the earlier posts noted, why not do away with having to choose caps inductors, etc at all? You then won't have to worry about whether this cap or that cap will sound the same, better or just different. Why not just bypass them by going to an active crossover between the pre and power amps. People have been doing it for years, and most are adjustable on the fly for XO frequency, slope, etc. Seems like a much easier and cheaper solution than guessing on caps and such. IMHO.

Yeah sure, active crossovers are great, I used them exclusively in car audio, but there is a definite added complexity and a lot of tweaking to get it sounding right.

An active crossover does get rid of things like Zobel networks, and one could use level controls to replace the resistors often found in passives, but you'd need an eq of sorts to mimic any notch filters that may be present to smooth driver frequency response behavior.

My TW3's are too complex to replace with a simple two way active crossover.

Yes, I guess if your passive XO is doing more than just the usual XO functions, then things get a bit more complex.

Yeah, these are pretty sophisticated, you have an inboard 6.5" with a coaxial tweeter, then an outboard 8" with a coaxial tweeter, and the outboard ones are padded down I think 6db from the in board drivers. Then there are two pots for the outside drivers woofer and tweeter levels, and then one for the overall tweeter level. Then there are 3 calibration pots that were set at the factory and control things like 4khz relative to 12khz, 4khz off axis level, and then finally a pot for midrange time domain compensation.

There are many active XOs with attenuation to address that But still gets complex.

If I'm counting this correctly, these crossovers have 33 parts. I can't imagine you could duplicate this with just an active crossover. Maybe several crossovers and some DSP at the very least.

I would bet dollars for donuts there is no way to duplicate that time delay circuit in an active crossover.

Some speaker designers do a passive better than any active system could achieve, even with a two-way speaker.........not many, but they do exist.

But, from what I understand many speakers can work better with the right active set-up, properly set-up.
