Why is there no abbreviation for "electrolytic capacitor"?

I am a Dutch native speaker and common jargon term for this type of capacitor is "elco" ("electrolytische condensator"). In English this doesn't seem to exist. There is a company called Elco, a forum member and that's about it. Some people use the word "'lytic" but that doesn't have the same feel to it. I just use "electrolytic" but that's a lot of typing. Wozzup with that?

None of that is as snappy as "elco". I find this remarkable. The Germans also use Elko. Caps make sense, but 'lytic leaves something lacking. I visit English fora a lot because of the much larger audience compared to Dutch sites but I just couldn't help but notice.

being a car guy, and "elco" being slang for el camino, i can not endorse this. :dunno:

why do you feel that 'lytic is lacking.

Maybe because it was invented my a native English speaker and that's what he choose to name it?

I'm sure there's a zillion words that don't cross over from Dutch to English or English to Dutch.

Must be local. I've known owners of these vehicles, which are a rarity in Europe, and no-one used that name. As for 'lytic, like I said it's just not snappy. But of course it does the job. As do the other terms. In Dutch terminology there are more constructs like elco, "trafo" (transformer is transformator in Dutch) and "varco" (variable capacitor) are the commonest.

Think I'll stick to e-cap. Snappy enough. Cappy enough

i don’t use term that often and just say the whole thing electrolytic capacitor. I can’t stand “lytic”. It reminds me of someone that I know who shortens every worrd with more than 3 syllables. Say the whole thing, enjoy the glorious language. If you were kissing say Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island, would you just give her a shortened quick peck, or would you kiss her properly?

You do you, I'll do me.
