Why no treated cloth "re-surrounding"

+1 much, much longer....as in I've never seen a set of cloth surrounds that needed, umm, re-clothing.

Yep. My LaScalas have cloth surrounds. I bought them new in 1979 and they're still going strong. My EV's on the other hand...

On a sealed system you have to treat the cloth to maintain the seal, but I've never seen them rot.

No place I am aware of. I'd be interested to know where Gordon W. got the 'after market' surrounds mentioned in a previous post. 1/2 roll cloth surrounds are unobtanium. Whereas, flat, accordian type cloth surrounds are readily available but much stiffer than the vintage, fine mesh cloth type.
I have had good luck with replacing badly torn cloth surrounds with foam surrounds. Compliances are in the same ball park.

That guy's method is strictly 'hit-or-mis' with no concern seemingly expressed for duplicating original performance. With that approach, refoaming would seem the far safer choice for success.
A flat, cloth surround will not perform the same as a 1/2 roll type. Sure, it will give you something, but what?

Oh wow, I did not mean for this to get testy. The only old speakers that I have with cloth surrounds are a pair of Marantz Imperial 7's, and the surrounds are fine. I was just wondering why that when you seem them and any of the Imperial series on ebay, it clearly shows that the foam surrounds need replacing. Maybe someone once replaced the cloth surrounds with foam? My cloth surrounds are still pliable.
Plenty of cloth surrounds need to be retreated in order not to leak -- old ARs and KLHs spring to mind -- and what to coat them with, and how, is a ticklish issue. And I have seen cloth surrounds sag when supporting heavy woofers -- Leak Sandwiches are notorious for this. The entire surround slips downward until the woofer is at such an angle that it can't play at all.

I have seen cloth surrounds that look fine, but they have become so stiff that they can hardly move. I've had limited success using various solvents to remove the old doping material and retreating them, but replacement would be better. I think some of the cases I've seen were caused by people resealing the surrounds with rubber cement. It starts out soft and rubbery, but at least some types eventually dry out completely.
