why use modded sony playstation as cd player

You did call the guy an audio snob. Around these parts that's not a complimentary appellation.

Do you mean bicycle when referring to your favorite bike? No motorcycle I've ever heard of has only one speed (gear). At 70 the only thing I now ride is a bicycle. I bought a Ninja the first year they were released and several bikes after that. Prior to the Ninja I had a GPZ-550 and a Yamaha RZ-350. I now have two bicycles, one is a Classic Trek 930 Columbus tubed frame with all Campy/Cinelli gruppo w/Look pedals. The other is a Look Carbon Fiber with all S-RAM and Look pedals

There are some things I don't understand about some posters here. They will buy something vintage, sink several times what they paid to have it perform up to spec and then complain about how much new gear costs even though they've spent damn near as much for their re-furbished vintage whatever.

FWIW: I've never understood the obsession with vintage audio gear. Most of it I didn't want when it was new.

My apologies for going off topic. I'll post no more on this thread.

I can easily understand why people only like modern high end equipment........but you cant understand just why others have a different veiw? Really?

I find with audio, like watches, guns and cars, I am interested in all of them to some extent even though I would only own a small % of them.

Perhaps you should read my post again. I was trying to point out that buying a vintage whatever and then spending a lot more money to get it working properly is fine. The part I don't get is complaining about the cost of new gear when that vintage piece ends up costing damn near as much as new.

I don't restrict my likes to only new or newer gear. A pair of highly modified Dyna MKIII's are in daily use in my home. I initially built them from kits in the early 70's. An Accuphase T-101, a VPI HW-19 and a couple of Naks also get almost daily use. A pair of Acoustats were my speakers for 25+ years. They were replaced only because a transformer in one melted.

That I've never owned or wanted a receiver has a great deal to do with my position.

You forgot the part where you say you don't understand the "obsession" people have with vintage, implying that those who collect and like vintage better are somehow "obsessed". It was bs.

I know this thread took a wrong turn but I do have a question regarding PS1 mods. After looking at some of the things people have done, what are the big cylinder or square things mounted on top of some of them?

This is a fun thread.

My experience : I got a 5501 playstation last year for fun(well I already had two here for gaming, but they're later revisions). Started spining discs on it, and I... thought it sounded very good! very lively sound and on the warm/smooth side. Plenty of detail in the mids. Bass was alright but not super fast, honestly. Very enjoyable and non-fatiguing sound. My guess is, this probably beats a lot of CD players that are worth up to $500 at retail. Pretty cool for a game console you can get used for $20!

That's where you're wrong. Not understanding is not the same thing as a put down. The proof is that a substantial portion of my own gear is vintage. The major difference between me and the "obsessed" is that I don't stockpile gear. Nor do I have the mistaken belief that the science and engineering behind audio gear hasn't advanced since the 70's and 80's. Also, I've never considered receivers to be the be all end all of audio. In fact I've never bought a receiver. I was gifted with a Rotel RSX-1067 which I promptly sold.

Since you brought it up, IMO/E many vintage lovers are obsessed. Why else would anyone collect 10, 15 or more receivers and 20+ pairs of speakers.?

Wow, so people are obsessed if the have more than what you consider a " normal" amount of anything? WTF? I have several rifles and pistils, am I obsessed? I have several vintage mid century modern furniture peices, am I obsessed? I have three dogs as well....

The amount of something someone has does not define obsession. Letting a hobby take over your life to the detriment of everything else IS. I find it hard to believe you don't know that. The inability to understand how other people find collecting interesting is rather concerning as well.

Didja ever have a comic or baseball card collection? From your statements if ya did it would be very small, like one card.WooHoo. "hey guys ya wanna come back ta my house and see my one card collection.I also got one comic book too" "Ahhh maybe some other time Joe" :bye:

I never collected baseball cards. I've never been a fan. I was a military brat and a large portion of my youth was spent in Europe. I stopped reading comic books when I was about ten (1957). I discovered the library on base and all the printed content that books offered. They had separated all the Science Fiction into it's own section. That section was for me better than any comic book.

OTOH: I have 3500+ LP's and 1600+ CD's. So, you see I do understand collecting. For me one good whatever is all I need. That's why I don't have multiple copies of either LP's or Cd's.

You understand what you collect but if you are not interested in those items then those things are stupid and the collectors obsessed.

Got it.

Thanks for clarifying .

And I don't have multiple copies of my sx-1280 or my KR-9050.

I’m surprised they can be modded. I like the ingenuity of what people come up with. I have my PS3 hooked to a sound bar and it sounds pretty decent. It’s a bummer the ps4 slim doesn’t play cds anymore but I’m not sure about the PS4 pro.

Please don't put words in my mouth.

My point is, I don't understand collecting multiples of what is essentially the same thing.

Not once in any post I've made anywhere at any time have I in any way suggested or inferred that what someone does is stupid. Obsession and stupidity are not the same thing.

Yeah, the wireless controller is worth it. Makes it very nice to use. I have two, in one the laser is a little flaky but the other one is rock-solid. Use it in my bedroom system.

This pictures was taken before I discovered the PS2 remote and plug-in transmitter works great on the PS1.

HPIM3967.jpg

Man this is a HUGE angle I never even thought of. I bought a Magnavox CDB560 without a remote. I haven’t been able to figure out a remote for it and it’s way too big of a PITA having to get up to change tracks.

It just really detracts from the listening experience so much.

I just-so-happen to have just won an auction for a SCPH-1001 and it should be here any day now.

I’m going to have to get this transmitter remote set up thing stat!

Playstation ability to read red book at time it first came out was bleeding edge technology and it is STILL obvious how good
I do not care what other people say about it
Still fine sounding machine
Only problem is to find GOOD QUALITY lasers if you need one
JJ

I feel like I should know what Redbook is but all I can think is my mom having a subscription to the magazine of the same name!

Time for more research... there is SO MUCH to learn here. I’m new to this hobby and I realize that what I know so far is just scratching the surface of what there is to know!

You can buy those fancy dress up kits for the PS1 but I just did some cut outs from vinyl shelf liner and stick on letters. Anything to cover up that ugly playstation badge. This 5501 has all the Dog Breath mods plus an internal remote. It weighs twice as much as the stock unit. I understand the 5501 has the better laser.

FWIW Red Book means standard CD recordings ( not SACD's ).

You can still find these Playstations at flea markets for around $5 unless the seller knows what he has but most don't. I've had this 5501 for 5 or 6 years. I traded several stock units to a friend who once sold the modded ones on A'gon. He's an EE and violinist in Charlotte and that's an interesting combination.

To people throwing functionning consoles in the thrash : please don,t do this :(

sell it back or give it to a gamer or something. I know there were many made, but I always HATE to see consoles/carts/disc thrashed...

If anyone has a 1001 or 5001 they don’t want I’ll take them for the cost of shipping!

I have a feeling I’ll be murdering a few once I start attempting mods! LOL
