Playstation 1.

Mod and and try it, don't cost more than twent-thirty bucks and a little time reading what to do.

This thread is just like others, and I'll use any of the Pas3 ones as examples. A few will post who did the work to fix there's up properly. Whether or not they like 'em is useless. Unless you do your own, you'll never know. Oh, and the rest post but don't know more than hupla or speculation. More crap, unless you just do your own. May I add, and I'll agree w/JNeutron, these are only vid gamers, ----unless you make it different. Get crap out of sig path, and move the heat and power supply. Also stop the vibrations these are very small and light weight, they need help.

And like any hype it snowballed until the so=called "audiophiles" (or audiofools) thought that just because it had gold plated RCA audio connectors it must sound better.

Which model came with the gold RCA's, Owning at one time or another and modding 4 of them. I never knew of these rare birds, I'd really like one.

Well, maybe they were gold plated? Don't really remember. Maybe the current leftover crop of consoles that have the RCA outputs have had all the plating rubbed off. It's been a couple of years since I tried to do this little modding experiment. Tried as I may I could never get any better sound quality compared to a older Technics slp-3 that I used as a reference. But still, modding is the fun part. If the OP wants to try it he should. There is a lot to learn and its fun. The main thing about this console is that its all plastic with no vibration absorbers of any kind so the vibrations wreck havoc on the signal. The internal board layout, power supply, construction, and parts selection was, first and foremost, to build a cheaply priced video game console. To expect any more out of it...... well. It may be a better project to mod that said Luxman. Start with a good base, then work up. Regardless, modding a project is half the fun. If the OP does try his hand at it I'd be interested to hear his results.

Merry Christmas.

I think it sounds fine but hate the hassle of using the control and a TV screen to select tracks, start, pause, etc. More clutter than I like.

You don't need a TV when just using it as a CD player. Just remember when you load a CD, "X" is PLAY and R1 is next track, L1 is back one track. If I want to select a track (let's say track 7), I just tap the X and hit the R1 button 7 times.

Although, I do like to watch my music when I hit the SELECT button. One of the selections looks like a spectrum analyzer.

Agreed.

Really, if you're going to "mod" these players then they're not original, now are they?

The Stereophile review above that started all the frenzy was "not" done with a PS1 that was modified in any way! So I don't even understand what we're talking about if we have to open this up and turn it into something it "never was".

Not sure I understand your point. Any component that sounds good stock could be improved with modifications (such as swapping tubes or capacitors). The conversation in this thread just migrated to a discussion on how to improve the stock Playstation.

While never meant to be a audio cd player, it does a pretty good job even in stock form.

I have one and it's ok. The output volume on them is really low for starters plus the controller only has basic stop, start, next, previous..

Been a few years since I had one, but I remember my unmodded PS1 as having a pretty smooth, warm character overall, and to my ears, it actually sounds quite a bit better than the PS2 with music and games. I don't know that I'd call it a giant killer per se, but if you don't have a dedicated CD player, it's a good choice if you want something that sounds pretty decent and doesn't take up too much space. Just keep your expectations realistic.
