WiiM WiFi Streamer

I'm not aware that they will support display to HDMI, as far as I know it's just for ARC audio.

Meanwhile, here's a good overview, up until the 9 minute mark where he starts with the silly opinions.

Very surprised by that since they already have a video signal on the internal screen. I guess they have a couple things to add to future version that I would find useful - a USB input (to be able to use the internal DAC with a computer) and video over HDMI (assuming it could fill a TV screen..last I heard, the Fiio will put out video over HDMI, but it only supported the Android screen dimensions..so black bars down the side.

I may get one for the office when they have a silver version, but the unit would be too far away from living room seating position to get much out of the on device display. The USB out would be nice, though. If I get one for the office, I will try it out in the living room, but will probably live with the WIim Pro I already have in that area.

It looks like the Wiim Ultra is available to order on Amazon. I was hoping for the silver version (which their FAQ says will be one of the colors), so I am going to wait it out and maybe watch some reviews. I am mainly interested in feeding the HDMI to my TV for album art, but the USB out could come in handy, too, since I have a currently unused Topping D10 sitting in the space (occasionally use it with an iPad).

If it had USB input, I would probably get one for my office, too. I may still get one for that space at some point to replace the Wiim Mini, but I will try out one in my living room and see if I still want to go that route. It would be nice having that touch screen right next to my office chair. Also, I could use the headphone output for variety since I have a Little Dot tube amp in the space now.
I don't get streamers with a screen like that. And I really don't get that it has touch.

Why would I look at the track picture og the album picture?

It is much inconvenient to get up and touch the screen when you can just use the remote or your iPhone or iPad.

IMO it's a classic case of it's made because they can, not because they should.
Like capacitive buttons for turning lights on the steering wheel. Or anywhere in a car really.

I think it depends on use case. As a desktop setup within arms reach, I think it would be very nice. I have an Amazon Alexa device I use to play music on my Wiim Mini. It would be nice to see album art just pop up without needing an iPhone or iPad involved (Amazon Show will display album art, but you have to dig through a menu first). I think it is also practical to just hit pause, play, skip, etc on the LCD. Similar to Car Play. I like album art, but don’t always want to fiddle with my phone.

That being said, unless the headphone amp is decent, I doubt I will be getting one. The iPad has clear advantages for desktop use ( other than the fact that it ties up my iPad). The album art looks better on the 13 inch screen and it can also feed an external display if I want to see album art on a larger display. It has Siri built in and will play hi res on Apple Music. The main benefit of the Wiim is that I can use it when my iPad is tied up or in another room or backpack. Glad to have both options.

We use AppleTV more than the Wiim I have in my living room for music, so I was more disappointed by the lack of HDMI video out. The small LCD would be less useful for me in that situation, but I still prefer the aesthetics of a built in LCD. I doubt that I am alone because we are seeing manufacturers add it to many streaming devices.

FYI if you already have a WiiM Pro or Pro Plus the room correction feature is now available for free. Make sure you have the latest update and go into settings. Only works on iOS and not available on the WiiM mini. I’m going to spend time later today experimenting with it but what a great feature on an already great product.

True. I've tried it for fun to compare with my Dirac Live. It recommends boosting the high frequencies 10 dB from 9 kHz for some reason.
Maybe I need to clean my iPhone ports though..

Tried it on my Wiim Pro+. Can't say I noticed an immediate difference, but I haven't given it much play time. Pretty quick and easy process - I wonder how effective, since it only really takes one short sample reading from one position. My Buchard A500's and Sonos gear require you to get up and move around the room with the test noise playing for 60 seconds.

It's not very effective with one measurement position. You want an average at and around you listening position and still then it can be hit or miss.

I agree. Having used multiple multiple room correction products (including Dirac and REW), I would say this is the bare minimum, but it is a welcome start. At least the Wiim product developers are moving in the right direction.

In my case it makes more sense the way WiiM does it with one measurement position. When I listen to music, I'm always in the same spot, therefore averaging readings from around the room could only have a negative impact. I want room correction for me, where I sit when listening.

When I'm not in that spot, it's just background music and room correction is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned.

I get what you are saying. It's just not quite how room correction works (best) even with a fixed listening position. It needs inputs left and right, up and down, back and forth from this position to make proper gated measurements, to proper guesstimate which EQ and levels to apply to the left and the right speaker. A global EQ is not good enough.

It's just how it is. I know from experience as I have used in-room measurement based EQ for a long time with REW, rePhase, and Dirac. You can get an okay result with moving mic measurements and pink noise from and around your favourite chair. But a single sweep measurement will not suffice.

I get what you're saying, but in practice the WiiM room correction improved the listening experience for me. It may not be perfect, but it works.

With single sweeps it's hit or miss. That's just how it is. Good it works for you.
I'm a fan of the Wiim Pro as well. A disruptor of the market for sure.

I got the Ultra today. Haven’t had a chance to test everything, but got it connected to Amazon and the line input for my iPad/topping DAC. Happy with it out of the box. The headphone amp sounds fine (haven’t run tests on it or anything… just how it sounded out of the box) with my AkG K701s, so I am planning to hold onto it. IMG_3031.jpeg
