Wolfson's annual report shows annual revenue of $179 million. Beats close to $1.5 billion. How is that sad?

Am I correct in assuming that Wolfson makes products that are very cheap on their own however they sell millions and millions of them? Am I correct in assuming that Wolfson is more of an OEM if anything?
I just don't see a logical comparison between an OEM and a lifestyle brand.

Wolfson makes the physical chips.
Beats Audio in phones and laptops is nothing more than a software equalizer that you can never truly disable. Still a difference. Software vs. hardware.
A lot of iPods and iPhones are known to have Wolfson chips in them....

Yeah, the article seems to be making a strange comparison. A few reason Apple bought Beats were not mentioned...Jimmy Iovine, music streaming service, and revenues. Wolfson has nothing comparable in those areas.

Some months ago while in a store I happened on a Beats headphone display and reading so much about them thought I would give a listen. Can not remember the models nor do I want to. IF the ones I tried are considered good by today's market, I am happy to be much older. Most of the displayed models were in the $175 and up range to my hearing reminded me of the early digital era with some of the wacky things that came out to promote and prove how good a CD is.

I have read that there are TONS of knock-off Beats headphones, so people on Craigslist could simply be unloading those.

You are correct. When I googled "beats annual report" 10 sites selling black market Beats came up.

On the bright side, I've tried Beats (No doubt demo'd with some EQ-modified audio stream), and I just don't like them or the way they feel. Not even that fond of the way they look (Now, ... Soul by Ludacris, that's another story... Break me off a chunk).
I lke my RSII's (RSIIi, actually), but even they're not perfect. I get the feeling I should have gone with RSI's instead, as I think they may have a fatter bass (which I like), although I find that the earpads from my SR80's solve much of that problem in the RSII's. But I'd sure love to try the RSI's with the SR80 pads. I think that could be perfect for me, or close at least.
But as far as crappy, mass-fi-marketed designer headphones go, there's just no real accounting for taste OR sound-quality.

I have a small collection and use fountain pens, especially fond of Parker. There is a Chinese company that makes cheap knockoffs of the 51. Look similar but distinctively different. They can be had for sound $3. Not long ago, there appeared knockoffs of the knockoffs that look almost exactly like the knockoff. These sell in the range of $1. Seems nothing is sacred.

You are expressing incredulity at the notion of people making knockoffs of one of the most desired items on the market, esp one that are primarily marketed towards kids that don't know any better?

I'd think that Beats would be one of the very most likely to have knockoffs made in their likeness.
