They probably tried for the rack mount look, 20 years ago when they were punk kids who didn't know what they were doing. UGH!

Back around 1982 up at LSU I knew some punkers, they painted the inside of their toilet black. I don't think they were able to get back their security deposit at the end of the year. That and the damage done by their pair of free range ferrets.

These stereos were throwaway's to many people. It's like prettying up a pig to them. They didn't know any better... My father hated the original tan top on his early 1960's Jaguar convertible that he bought dirt cheap in the late 60's, so he spray painted it black! How could he know the car would be worth a fortune today?!?
 
give it a bath in some paint thinner for awhile.. it might rub right off leaving who knows what underneith...
would the origional lettering also come off with paint thinner or other solvents?

I can't say I LIKE it but it's a lot nicer than than hack job on ebay.
 
Black Face

Maybe they were going for the "black face" look of the overseas models.
Here is my SX-5580 (a "black face" SX-1050).

They are pretty, Like a vintage Pioneer in a Tux. :D

The other day I saw a Sansui AU-555A spray painted blue, I felt like beating up the guy.
(what would my therapist say? I'm only in my second month of anger therapy)
 
Unfortunately, all original lettering would be destroyed.

Pictures are very small and blurry. On the last picture, I see there are no any foot (three holes on every foot place).
 
In 83, we all* wanted black audio gear, and didn't want any old style silver anymore.
I might have done the same - and probably would have sprayed half the dial window by accident - if only I had a silver receiver.
It were the eighties.

We all* changed back later.
