Yamaha cdx?

If you own a 1100 or 1110 or 5000 or 10000, bypass the supply pins of the DIT chip YM3613 with a good 1µF film cap and also the corresponding 74HCXX.
There is a small BG cap except in 1110 and 5000, if you have a bigger one, add /replace it.

Sound gets even better.

1100 is better than 1110.

Best stay away from the PCM58 models like 1120.

Hi all

I'm going to try and pick up a CDX-1060; I've seen a little of it mentioned in this thread but not a whole lot so if anyone can fill me in on the ins and outs of this player then I'd be grateful! There's also that webpage posted earlier in this thread of 1060 tweaks but it's in Danish and babelfish didn't want to know anything about it.

And for the record, my 'vintage' yamaha gear:
TX-1000, MX-1, 2 x M-40, CDV-W901 w/ADP-1, plus a couple of other lower end bits and pieces

Welcome to AK Thudd! I've never listened to any of the CDX-10xx series players so don't have an opinion on the sound, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't a very nice sounding machine.

I am very happy with my CDX-1030 and from what I have seen the 1060 is very similar to it but newer and improved. If I found one for under $100 I'd be all over it. On ebay I have seen them go for over $300

Where can you establish the release date / year of manufacture for more recent Yamaha models?
eg 993 593 493 / 596 496 / 497 being newest

You think it would be in the last digit but apparently not

REDone the CDX model number has to be red as: last 2 ciffers show witch series the player belongs to. The next one or 2 ciffers tell about witch class the player belong to, the higher the better. Each series usually run for 2 (later 3) years, only special models run longer. But it all shows really nice in the link.

One thing to notice is the MSRP; it is the German/Austrian price. It can vary very much to the US MSRP due to exchange rates Dollar vs. Euro and Dollar vs. D-Mark (the old West German money).

Thanks Mandak your advice is always warmly received & welcomed

I understand the prefix number scale & always get interested in the higher numbers on the auction site at least until they get off my purchase limit

It looks like Yamaha dropped the high scale designation in recent years
ie 993/553/443 replaced by the longer running 596 /496/396 & now it is just 497 / 397 (which are also fairly close in price & My pocket wont go to the current new top end.) The actual specification (with the exception of its weight & case) of the 497 reads higher than the 993 but I have no idea of how they would compare in sound terms.

Newer models interest me in terms of flexibility of media playback & hopefully lesser risk of maintenance costs / problems.

But I have a nagging thought I would really prefer the older higher number 993~ in terms of sound coming through my speakers. (My only hesitation being possible maintenance issues). Having said that my current CD player is a very old first generation player circa 1985 & which I like, so on that basis I am not too concerned with getting the very latest dac permutation, but I am anxious to get what I would call a smooth sound without exaggerated sibillance.

I would welcome some pointers & advice

You are forgetting the new CD-S2000, looks like the good old players - inside!

I think Yamaha simply didn't believed that the CD media (PCM coded 44.1 kHz 16 bit) was able to get any better after there release of the YAC514 DAC (1994). In any case they used it in advertising well into year 200x (ProBit), some years ago they stopped writing what D/A that was inside the units. My small theory is that it still is the 514 inside Yamaha CDP's.

About CDX-497 vs. 993 they don't really compare, the 993 is in line with the old monster players (CDX-xxxx) and the 497 won’t get near this quality. If you get a chance grab a 993 (you might also try a CDX-890 or 880, they are cheaper) but they are Europe only.

Many Thanks

No I did not forget the CDs2000 ~ that's the one out of my price range just now

I'm in UK so look at Europe E Bay sometimes
but prices have been climbing recently

Yes prices has beeing going up over the last 2-3 years, about 100% over the last 2 years on the TOTL's.

I am also looking forward to getting one of the CD-S2000 when they come on the used market :)

I've come across a CD-5050 (black version of 2020 apparently), this seems to be a bit of a rare beast. Given its age, where does it sit sonically in the scheme of things, compared to a modern mid-range CDP like a nad or arcam? (or in other words, would I be buying it because it's a damn good player or just because it's a nice unit to have?)

If I found a CDX-5050 at a reasonable price I wouldn't be posting till I had it in my hands. I really want one of these in black. The 1120 is the same player as well. If you pass on it please let me know.

The CD-5050 is the same as the CDX-1120, the 2020 has better shilding inside and wooden sides.

I bought mine because it is damn good player and it's nice to have :)

The DAC is a bit out dated and so is the opamps, but the rest is still up to date and it is hard to find anything like it today.

it seems like my Yamaha CDX-993 is having problems. i heard distortions in one channel. it is sometimes hard to noticed, but while playing certain frequencies such is trumpet, loud passages of any kind, or any similiar high frequency, distortion is audible.

what went wrong? laser or something else?
I"m having the same symptoms in both channels on my CD-2000.
