The NS-1000 being the best Yamaha speaker offering(and then some), how do the NS-690II's rank and perform comparatively to the NS-1000 and others:scratch2:. Anybody have a pair? Thanks

I have NS-690's older models. They sound a little less revealing then my 1000's. As a kid they were my fathers speakers and basically got me hooked on Yamaha....They still sound excellent..The 690II's no doubt sound as good or better.:yes:Look pretty nice as well...

Really nice speakers indeed and a relative bargain in the used market when they turn up. Most of the sound you get in the NS-1000 at (generally) a tiny fraction of the cost. Really nicely built cabs as well.

What the others have said is true. The 690 (reg and II) share the same beryllium tweeter with the 1000 series, but do not have the beryllium midrange. The sound quality is not quite as good, esp, in the midrange, but it is still excellent; the 690s are excellent speakers that would probably be better known and appreciated, if not for the fame of their "older sibling" speakers (the 1000s) overshadowing them. If you have a chance to get a pair, grab them. They should be cheaper than the NS-1000s, making them quite a good bargain in sonic value for money terms

The NS-690 I has a woofer with a vented dust cap, the NS-690 II (and the NS-1000) does not. My NS-690 I pair also has all the straps on the back allowing it to be tri-amped. I have a pair of NS-690 II woofers as spares.

My NS 690s don't have a Beryllium tweeter -- I don't believe any of them do. At least I've never seen a pair with that tweeter.

Excellent speaker for the money. Amazing cabinet construction -- braced like your kid sister's teeth.

Oops, you're right - my mistake. I've seen and heard them, but never owned them (only NS-1000Ms, and those only recently), and was typing that in the wee hours (jet-lagged) with a "fuzzy head". Even without beryllium tweets, they are still very good-sounding speakers, though!
