Yamaha PC5002M extremely rare

i see a couple capacitors that look different between the 101M nudie and the shots i took of my PC5002M, but that doesn't mean the design is any different - could've been made at different times. from what i've seen, it's doubtful they used cheaper passive components or cut any real corners in the PC5002M.

one thing i've always wondered about, is the amp design fully balanced?

socalsam, they are indeed incredibly accurate sounding. as you'd expect from that graph, the bass you get is exactly what the input signal asks for, no matter how challenging. the PC2002, which is still a great amp by any measure, doesn't come close if you look at the same graph. they make the M-80 i used to own look hazy and emotionally reserved. i'd really like to know which amps in the 250+wpc range are its real competitors sonically. Mark B has said his MX-10000 is better (he can expound upon this if he likes), but besides him and i (who haven't heard a lot of different amps), who else has on AK has even heard a PC5002M? jeez, i've got to get people over to my house!

Hi Mark B sir,

Thank you for your information!! :thmbsp:

Do you know how to change it to 220v ?

THX

don't believe this is possible. pretty sure the transformers don't have the extra windings. and unfortunately, unless i've misread on the step-down transformer, i can't imagine you can find an adequate one for this amp, unless you find a giant one from a hospital or a physics lab (remember, the amp is fully capable of drawing 30 amps of current). your best bet is probably to get an electrician to put a 110V line in, if the european (or wherever) system is set up to allow that. what is your situation? do you have a line on a 101M or PC5002M?

Astep-uptransformer would be perfectly fine.It would simply have to be big enough.
My rule of thumb;is that the transformer rating is 4 times the maximum voltage draw specified on the rear of the amp.

sunboy's asking about making a 110V amp work on 220V, which means a step-down is needed, at least from the amp's perspective. but it seems like a step-down transformer can become a step-up transformer just by flipping the leads around - is this right?

so with the 4x rule of thumb, you'd want something like a 6kW transformer? can't remember what the amp says on the back, but 1.5kW seems like a reasonable number since we can do 750W RMS stereo @ 4 ohms. i don't know how efficiency factors into those power rating labels...

That's been my rule of thumb.
If the 5002 says that it's maximum voltage draw form the wall is 1.5 K,then a 6Kv step-down(you are correct) transformer in my opinion will be able to supply every possible draw from the amp with an adequate operating margin.

It'd be a shame to own an amp like the 5002,only to skimp on the transformer.:thumbsdn:
I am aware that a transformer of that rating would be of a considerable size, and cost, however that is the equation I apply to all equipment requiring step-down/step-up.

Hi cdfac,

My current setup is Accuphase C-260 + Accuphase A-50 + JBL 4344 :D
But after i tried the 101m, i consider to replace the it with 101m..... :scratch2:
So, i want to know if i can manually change the voltage to 220v without use any transformer, but it seems not !!

I think that the Furman AR-PRO voltage regulator would work for you.

Here's a link to the specs: Furman AR-PRO

Used price is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the new price, and they're readily available.

Hi Mark B,

Thank you for your information again !!
Now, i just use one ISOCLEAN POWER transformer for 101m
How about your PC5002M compare with MX-10000 ??

Hi theophile,

"Can you go active with the JBLs? "

No......because i don't have any crossover gear on hand

The MX-10000 sounds a bit better to me, and the bass is tighter with more slam. Of all the amps I've heard I think that the PC5002M comes closest to the MX-10000.

By the way, you have an awesome system. How about starting a thread with pics and descriptions of your gear?

So, you sold out the PC5002M already ??

I would think that based on the intent of the MX-10000 vs the PC5002M, that most comparisons on most home speaker systems "should" end in the same conclusion as you have reached. The MX-10000 as the ultimate "art meets science", no holds barred, sound quality above all else, elegant/purposeful design, aspirational amp. The PC5002M is a commercial unit, and is designed for extended commercial (rigorous) usage (both in use and during transport), reliability under extreme conditions, rough handling, etc. It just happens to also be at or near the top of its class in the commercial realm, and can compete with top class home units as well. I do not suspect that there are many home systems that will cause the PC5002M to break a sweat, and it won't win many elegant design awards, but it's has a different kind of beauty (think Lamborghini LM02...really powerful, really fast, the ultimate of it's kind).

If a PC5002m was a car...

Now don't call the PC5002M a Lamborghini LM02, US soldiers will just start blowing them up... like they did with the Lamborghini LM02 (only 200 build).

Really nice setup sunboy, first time I see a 101M in a living room.

I'm not sure PC5002M / 101M can beat the MX-10000 in sound quality,
But i'm sure the PC-5002M / 101M look like a beast more than MX-10000

Hi gentleman, which outlook is better, PC5002M or 101M ?? :music:
