You know you have crappy audio equipment if....

If the turntable platter is plastic and made to look like a mat.
If the speakers have non-disconnecting cables/wires and non-removable grills with little holes drilled underneath the grill.
When your factory car stereo sounds 20 times better than your home stereo.
If the brand tag has the word "Price" after the word "Fisher".
If it has built-in speakers.
If the manufacture date is later than 1978 and it's a Sony.
If it says "General Electric" or "GE".
If a handful of paper clips weigh more then any of the components.
If it says "Yorx" on it and it's not a peppermint patty.

It was manufactured by the CRAPPY AUDIO COMPANY Inc., a subsidiarity of GLOBAL MEGABUCK INDUSTRIES

1. It weighs 3 pounds but has plastic RACK HANDLES
2. It has a fancy EQUALIZER multicolored display printed on the face to take up space
3. It was marketed as CONSUMER ELECTRONICS
4. You have to close Mickey Mouse to listen to a record
5. Your daughters Chatty Cathy doll has better base response and presence

....if you can only get it on TV
....if you bought it from QVC or HSN
....if the guy at Best Buy says you've made a really good choice
....if Target carries it
....if they need a dynamic pitchman to sell it

Actually there are a few decent pieces of GE equipment.See the link in my sig for examples.ANYTHING mass market from the tube era will sound good. Not always audiophile quality, but it beats the heck out of a Chinese made Crosley,or anything with earbuds.Wildcats,on the other hand, are cheap SS crap, the Crosleys of their day. They sound like a cheap shirt pocket radio of the period. But damn if I wouldn't pick one up,if I saw one for a few bucks.

When there's a sticker on the front panel bragging about 50 WATTS PER CHANNEL!* 5 CD CHANGER! OMGWTFBBQ SYSTEM!

*Yeah, you just know the asterisk means @10% THD.
...it has bass that shakes the pavement for a two block radius.

I live in the 'hood,I know of what I speak.

The sound is clearest if you turn the volume almost all the way down and put your ear right up to the speaker; it gets all scratchy when you try to turn it up to normal volume.

(Happened with the pair of Minimus-5s I paid $3.20 for when I auditioned them this morning. I'll see if I can vacuum some dust out or somehow get 'em right because I don't think they shouldn't sound as bad as they do, but maybe somebody thrashed the voice coils in the woofers).
