Your Favorite 8 inch 2-Way Speakers

Hi everyone I just scored a pair of AR Rock Partners which are a variation of the AR 18s and I also have a pair of AR 18bxi

Its interesting to see that Winslow Burhoe's EPI 100 in various forms as well as its progeny (Genesis, Human) all get a lot of love in this thread. My favorite 2 way 8" (despite specs indicating 7") is the Energy 22 Reference, also designed largely by Winslow Burhoe. Winslow claims that the Energy 22 was one of his best designs. I have used my Energy 22 Reference speakers for decades and they still reside in one of my secondary systems.

Energy 22 Reference speakers (which were the refined professional versions of the Energy Pro22) were used in recording studios and by the CBC.

My Frazier Dixielanders, a front horn-loaded 8" woofer with a 13" x 3" top-mounted wood midrange horn fed by an Atlas K55V. Once I added a Magnavox horn tweeter and high-pass crossover to fill in the missing top end, it's now my favorite 8" former two-way.View attachment 3404077

Burhoe's variations on a pair of drivers explicitly designed to complement each other, and roll off naturally while moderating each other's weaknesses was brilliant ..
No crossover just a cap to protect the tweeter ..

One more log on the fire. Wow, this is tough. Tie. First edition Boston A70 with the SEAS tweeter and EPI 100, but with respective power source synery, as they seem to have different friends. I like the East Coast stuff, but just scored a pair of KEF 104ab's (they count, right?) that I'll be integrating into one of my hi-fi ecosystems over the next while. Maybe the co-champs will be dethroned. Fun!

They were my favorite by being the only 8" 2 way speakers I'd ever owned. The Genesis model 1. Stylish green foam surrounds on the woofers and inverted dome tweeters. I used them for many years before branching out into speaker building. I'd had to re-foam them and lost that mint green surrounds. They're in a closet now.
