Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

attachment.php

NO stacking!

[Bite me, 511B weenies.... ;) ]

Bah. Weenie horn.

Want big? You want the 24"x28" mouth, 2" throat Community horns we have here at the shop. They, with the drivers, are like 3 feet long!

No problem doing 250 Hz with those!

Regards,
Gordon.

i knew it! after discussing those bad boys a while back, i suspected that is what you were up to. if i recall the price on them was reasonable too, around $140 or so? i am curious about how the monsters sound and even more curious if there is anyway for you to get off-axis measurements. umm...dr. geddes, will you please measure our megawaves?

i've decided to go the 1.5" horn route, even though it takes some of the econo out of the econowave because i know that i'll get the bug to experiment with some of the medium/large format horns.

in order to scale this one, i believe this is the same horn...

How much are those puppies? Any preliminary testing?
Kegger's gonna check the pricing, I believe, but "Less than you'd think" would be an appropriate characterization. You'll have to call; I'm on open account, and don't have an invoice yet.

No measurements yet, either, as I'm building up new E'Wave PC boards with switchable sensitivity for prototypes right now, but I may sneak in a curve or two later today. Mine are the 1.5" throat version, so it's gonna be BMS 4555, 2435HPL, or JBL 2452H-SL the drivers. :dunno:

Note: The 1" variant is thread-on:

Bah. Weenie horn.
The 2360 Biradials Powerman uses are bigger, but at 30" wide, these seem like a perfect fit for vintage A5 VOTT, Klipshorn, maybe, Jubilee bass bin, and Denis's Imperials, and somewhat more "rational" in height for minimizing driver center distance. We wouldn't want vertical nulls interfering with these.

["Waveguide," Gordon, "Waveguide." Let's get with the program here, m'kay...? ;) ]

Indeed so, apparently:

Driver's 2426H on that one; I can see Russell's eyebrows raisin' right now.

Haven't figured out what SSC™ Screen Spreading Compensation is about yet, but from those curves, the horizontal dispersion beams somewhat, from 85° down to 65° above 5 kHz, in a precisely controlled fashion.

[Not so huge next to that guy and 8' in the air, tho.... :pity: ]

Since its the off season for me and I have some spare time I would love too give this a attempt and have a few problems plus questions that maybe someone can help me with so Im not floundering around in the dark. I have a set of rectilinear 5 that have been collecting dust for 15 years(used for 15 years before that), needless to say they were rotted out and I have recently refoamed them for this project. But upon pulling them I remembered that I had the 12" woofers replaced or refoamed(Not sure which) back in the early 90s id say, SO they arent the originals I dont think. I have included a picture of the numbers on these. They sound great and put out plenty of decent bass but I have no specs on them whatsoever as I cant ID them. This will all be going back into the cabinets and the holes for the tweeters and mid will be plugged and a new hole for the econowave made to facilitate it. The cabinet inside dimensions are 23 1/2 x 13 1/2 x 12. Now to my questions, is there any way to ID these woofers so I can get better recommendations on them in particular? Since these cabinets didnt have a port, should I try this project with or without a port? And lastly I seen that some are using JBL waveguides and others using different ones, which is better or does it really not make a difference. Thanks, Bob.

I don't recognize that woofer, but, in a sense, it doesn't matter; if you like the way the bass sounds presently, just go with it for now. You can always add ports and/or install different woofers later.

The JBL and Pyle waveguides are interchangeable in this project....

Those big PTs are interesting. What is the cost?

More importantly, does anyone think there would be a concern with a vertically asymetric waveguide in an MTM arrangement? It seems that it might cause issues. There would be the option of going with a TMM as well.

M = midrange (woofer, in this case)
T = tweeter

MTM would be a vertical description of the drivers from top to bottom. In other words, my plan is to use my TD15M drivers flanking what horn I decide to use in between. each of the drivers will be in their own enclosures so I can arrange them whichever way I choose.

Best we know thus far, "modest," somewhat under $150 apiece.

I can't help much regarding the MTM alsignment other that to say I don't do it. TMM's gotta have the bottom one run in "0.5" mode, in my view, and is only justified to extend the LF of higher-efficency, "too small," or low x-max drivers....

Check out the JBL 4507 aka 4647 cabinet, 5 cuft with four ports providing adjustable tuning from 40 Hz downward.

Use "Search this Forum" for more info.

If that doesn't get you what you need, ask back here; a bunch of us E'Wavers have them and can furnish the details for you....

Ok i`ll research that cabinet and let y`all know how i get on.
Cheers, Steve.

In all honesty, I don't see the big horn buying us much of anything other than wow factor, which it certainly has plenty of. I passed on a set of 2360s with drivers recently for 120.00, which was probably a bad decision, but I didn't see how I could possibly benefit from their use in my home.

Zilch has shown us that the little guy will work down near 1k with the driver being more often the limitation than the lens.

That said, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested, anyway. However, a 15" is a damn tall horn to try to integrate into an MTM.

Zilch, if I did go with an TMM, you can be sure the second woofer would be in a .5 arrangement, it's really the only option. The drivers are certainly excursion limited. Two 15" drivers with 6mm xmax is just barely adequate and not something I'd expect to produce truly deep bass. Luckily, I'll have subwoofers that are much more capable supplementing the low end. For subwoofers, I'll have a 15" woofer (Lambda PB15) with 15mm xmax and two 12" woofers with the same excursion (Adire Shivas). All of the subs will be of the sealed variety to conserve space since the little lady won't allow me to install big IB subs. :)

Tweeking X-over for 2235H

Well I did as Zilch suggested to me and assembled the parts for the bass portion of the JBL 4430 Monitor. Seems like it should be perfect, similar crossover point, same driver, cu ft size of box,and tuning as what I'm doing here.

I hung the Zobel directly off the back of the cabinet posts that go to the woofer. Using it with the standard Econowave low pass, seems to have made a change to upper bass and male voice.

For the HP, I have stuffed one of the new bi wire boards Jack made. I figured I would just put the 2.6 mH coil where the 1.5 mh Erse went, but there is a slight size difference in size! I may have to mount them on their own board. I would just leave the bass portion of the bi wire board empty and not install the jumpers, Then bring the signal from the input of the Jack's board.

Actually, there is just enough room for the coil on the board, but the low pass circuit's capacitor would have to hang off the board, and the zobel would have to remain on the box's woofer posts.

For those interested, the zobel is a 14 uf cap and a 7.5 ohm resistor. The crossover, ( based on Zilch's 4430 clone crossover in the "4430 Help" thread on the LH forum ) a 2.6 15 Ga. air coil, ( dewound 2.7 ) and a 12 uf cap.

If the big horns perform anywhere near as good as the little guy's spec wise.... I'm in!

There is just something inherent in the sound of a larger horn, that is quite attractive to listen to, (I hope these live up)
(then of'course the gonadatrophia thing)
