Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Heh, heh.

The waveguide shape then evolves tangentially in an increased curvature in the flange region to form an exit opening that blends tangentially to vertical surfaces of the frontal plane which extend to the cabinet edges.

Geddes would likely be quite proud, indeed. ;)

We can apparently restore full constant directivity by using an appropriate screen grille, which will require some experimentation. Think "Transparent sunshade...."

Ha!

Rubbing my greedy little hands together...

I was on the fence for a bit about ZLH-ing my KLH 23's because I'd have to buy woofers as well. That put the price tag a bit too far out for me. Plus I'd be limited to the 11" wide baffle area of the 23's, eliminating the star of this thread, the 12x6 waveguide.

It all changes today: my brother in law has a pair of L56s he said I could have.

:banana::banana::banana::banana:

I had been meaning to ask him about them (I wasn't sure of the model #) since he took them out of his HT setup last year, and it dawned on me today when I was visiting.

I only got a quick glance at their condition, which seemed well within Ewaving reason... :D

So, will the waveguide and Selenium fit inside the L56 cabinet (outer depth of 11.75")?
Might I be able to reuse some of the network components?

Who knows when I'll be able to squeeze out the time needed to do a conversion, but I'll be damned if I'm not giddy as a mofo at the prospect.

Bonus: i may try the L56 tweets in the KLH 23's if the L56 cabs work out for the Ewave...

AK devours another portion of my soul.:deal: Thanks.:D

Still loving the sound of the EconoWaves. Really making me wonder about some of the other speakers I have and if I'll still have them :)

What I'm wondering Zilch, what about some of the drivers where with comp that
extreme top end is still drooping, might the horn restore/fix some of that on those?
(meaning something like PSD-2002 comes to mind)
In otherwords a normally less performing driver then that of the really nice ones on
this horn installed for home use could it provide just that touch extra comp there,:scratch2:
(Might be a good match for the seleniums as well ?)

The off axis looks pretty darn good, as long as there towed away from you, like we
normally have them setup I wonder how the pair measure with them aimed in front
of the listening position and the mic setup in the listening position?

Here is the technical spec sheet

There's some info in this L56 thread

Yes, easily.

Heh.

Cosmos beat me by an hour this time.... ;)

Yes, but only on-axis.

If you toe them in 45° as recommended by Geddes, that's 22.5° off-axis; your listening position will be outside that, i.e., @ 30°, perhaps, the green curve with BMS 4555, assuming we can work out HF comp to accomplish what I've shown there.

The "hotter" red curve will reflect off the opposite wall, harmlessly, presumably, behind the listener....

another day, another driver pops out from jbl. is there a spec sheet (frequency response/distortion measurements) on the 2217hpl as used in the dance5? that looks like a high sensitivity 14"...pro-version of the le14-h4? since subwoofers are in my plan, i'm looking for a high sensitivity mid-bass and this one seems to fit the bill. otherwise, my 'default' driver is the 2226h.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have another winner. Dynaco A-25 E-Wave.
Best with LF bypassed, woofer run full range. Wasn't wanting for bass response. Arbitrary opinions of a comparison with KegZillas(HPM-100 woofer)- less "wow" factor, bass didn't go as low (no surprises), but the A25 mids (i.e. vocals, solo violin, piano) a tad more 'refined', for want of a better adjective. Imaging superb.

Zilch, yu know what yu gotta do...........

PLUG IT BABY!!
Get yourself the foam and make a plug, that just may do something, could experiment with different densities.
(would love to see a graph of that)

There's other Pro 14s, also:

None of these are on the current transducer list.
If subs are a given, I'd go with 2206H, probably....

thanks z,
i'm not sure why i didn't check over there for the driver specs. :bash: btw, the 2217hpl shows up at the end of the transducer parts list as 74704 (2217hpl). it doesn't look as good as the 2206/2226 in performance. i'll probably go with the 2226h because it will be a better match for when i upgrade to the stupid big horn. :nutz:

speaking of which, since you may be the only one with the big array horn, any further details on how it is subjectively different from the small horns would be much appreciated. oh well, back to lurking...:lurk:

parts ordered. hoo, man...
I hope these 118H woofers are good enough.

there is a wait again on the PE .6 mH air cores, but I'm in no real hurry.

d'oh! gotta order the waveguides...

Just finished my 2A3 amp and my Ewaves are nearing completion...

Is anyone using the 220ti with the "bug" screen removed? I have heard of others doing this with Altec drivers with good results.

Hey guys...

I thought I would post a teaser pic of my just finished 2A3 amp that will be powering the high end on my soon to be finished E-Waves...

Thanks, the copper plate was sourced years ago for a different project from a jewelry/metal smithing store in Seattle that is now out of business(TSI).

Yes, James outputs(6123HS). Unfortunately no longer available in the U.S. and had to be sent directly from Taiwan.

Cool!

Lay the A-25 on its side to get the waveguide and woofer closer together, maybe.

Pete B tells us that the current Madisound replacement woofer is not equivalent to the stock original, but I ran the sim using that one's published T/S parameters, and at least insofar as bass performance is concerned, it will work well. :thmbsp:

Zilch, yu know what yu gotta do...........

Thought about that; the foam is not frequency-selective, I don't believe. :pity:

Use "Search this Thread" to find and review the Bauhausler, Kegger, and my discussion regarding deployment of tube amps for HF via passive biamp.

I should abstract that information and link it as a reference on Page #1 here....
