Woofman- BIG thumbs up! Apart from loud, how are you liking the sound?

Rosso- Enclosures are dead-easy; particularly for and engineer. 12" woofer and first-time cab-build: 6 cubic foot box tuned to 28hz using 2 3" wide ports and 3/4" wood. Ports: 6" long, box- 24" wide x 37" tall x 15" deep, stuffing along the sides and back, a few braces and triple-thick baffle.

This gave me an idea...

I shouldn't try to tune my Klipsch Heresy's, that are ~1.75 cu. ft., and then have a speaker that I would want to raise way higher off the floor, anyway. The cabinets need some work, so attaching a 3/4" plywood box to the bottom will acomplish two very important things. I could almost double the height of a Heresy and like it - a tall tower! The increased volume would be great, too.

I will run the simulation in BassBox 6 when I get home tonight. I've already ordered the Parts Express Dayton DC-300-8 (12"Classic woofer), and I think it will like the increased volume.

Woofman - Are your speakers ~32" tall? I think I got pretty close. What kind of paint did you use? Spray or roller?

Hey Woofman, those are great looking and I like your break in method......play them loud all night long at a wedding? If they are not broke in by the end of the night, they never will be. Cheers.
 
Yes, I wasn't sure all of them involved the e-wave 2-way configuration. Would there be a case within the home hi-fi, e-wave, 2-way context where the 4.5 cf box would be less desirable than the 2.5 cf box? I'm trying to avoid the "a little is good so too much must be enough" syndrome:scratch2:

My LE14s are in 4.7 ft3 box (33''x22"x14") that came out of my Valencia experiments. It's tuned to 32 Hz and that was what looked like the best size to me in WinISD.

I wanted a "bigger" box for better bass than my La Scalas were giving me, but a quick trip back to WinISD shows that a 2.5 ft3 tuned to 38 Hz is a pretty good compromise between extension and size too.
 
Anyone having distortion issues from DT220Ti at high volume? Compression driver only, woofer OK. Expecting too much? Over-driven? X/O or driver combo anomaly?
Distortion present with both TT/CD and valve or SS amps.
 
I never get to really high volumes here, but there were some issues early on with diaphragm alignment in D220Tis, which were easily remedied via rotating the diphragm.

If the distortion is in one only, that'd be my suspicion.... :yes:

Andyman - I'm going to be using LE14s in a 5 ft^3 box. I downloaded WinISD last night, and plugged in some LE14 parameters I found on the net. Here is what I used:

Fs = 28 Hz
Qts = 0.32
Vas = 147L
SPL = 92 db
Xmax = 5.1 mm

32 Hz looks good to me on a response plot using WinISD for my boxes, but want to make sure I have the parameters right. I'm a newbie at this.
 
They look great, woofman! The anticipation is killing me, i have everything done and dont have the waveguides yet. Hopefully they will show up this week or next.
 
Which would be the best Woofer choice?

Wharfedale W12 FRS 16ohm

JBL GT4-12 4 ohms (used for car subs) ... I have two of these new in the box...

In the 0.44 Beta not Alpha version of Winisd it has the perameters for the LE14 in it.

Now Zilch will (and should) chime in here, but looking at it I see 4 ft^3 tuned to 32hz
looking better than 5 ft. But yes the perameters you posted are the same ones I see. :yes:

The volume in your cabinet is very similar to my Barzilay cabs. Mine are tuned to 30 Hz and they have deep detailed bass. No sub needed. :no:

Lico's calcs are good. He's gonna lose some internal volume to displacement by the drivers and waveguide, and the bracing he's gonna install in those Bozak cabs. Tune to 32 Hz and they'll likely come in at 30. Good to go, I'd say.... :thmbsp:

And to think JBL put these in ~1.6 cubic foot cabs in the Lancer 99, and 2 cubic foot cabs in the L55!

Let's remember that LE14As have limited excursion and power handling capacity using them for extended bass like we are. Tuned higher and in smaller boxes, they're not being "pushed" quite so hard.

JBL clearly liked what they do, and subsequently beefed them up in the three later variants, "H" (L220/2), H-1" (L250) and "H-3" (Array 1400) to play with the big boys, and also build "medium-power" subs. :thmbsp:

Not that I can recall at the moment, but we tracked down some modern 12s that would qualify as equivalents earlier in this thread, I believe.... :yes:

Well if the calcs are good, it's purely by accident. I'm thinking of drilling two ports on front of each cabinet. These guys are going to be up against the wall unless I buy a new house with more room :) It's all theory at this point, until I pull out the power tools and reality sets in... thx

At the moment there in to small a box (for me anyway) ;) 1.5 tuned to 34hz with
new surrounds that are still pretty darn stiff and weee small amp pushin um as well..:D

Ideally I'd like to try 2 ft^3 tuned to 30.5hz with 2 ports, close one for 40hz and both
to go sealed, that layout looks pretty flexable I think.
