Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

1.) since the 2226H is a popular ewave woofer, is 15" woofer dispersion generally acceptable?

2.) If so, could there be an OB variant using 2 15" selenium woofers, with the second in a .5 mode? (I'm wondering if the dipole configuration would alter the directivity around XO)
One of the OB E'Wavers is going to have to tackle that one.

I'm not an OBer, alas, and know zip about 'em.

To go 3-way the matching EWG part is the 363395-001 @ $11.50, it takes the 195H driver. This combo is found in the PRX535

That's certainly worth a look, too. Jack and I have prototyped using the combo mid/high PT waveguides, which are considerably more expensive.... :dunno:

quick question...does anybody know what the horn flare is on the jbl k2 s9800? is it exponential, constant directivity, or something else? its rounded profile suggests exponential, an odd choice if cd is so superior, no? gracias!
 
I do a lot of thinking ( pre-planning) before turning screws or melting solder, this project is going to be like that.
I commented earlier on working out practical relative time alignment issues between the effective radiating portion of the woof at the x-over freq vs the diaphragm of the HF unit re relative planar positioning of the HF unit. I notice that the UREI monitors claim to be time aligned and with a coaxial arrangement that assumedly puts the HF unit well behind the LF as does most other coax multi-way drivers. If the UREIs were indeed time-aligned, how did they manage that? Knowing that might be useful here.
 
You haven't completed your research. There's phase delay in the crossovers. It's what Long and Associates were about. See Markwart, also....

I musta been having a technologically challenged moment. Apparently I did not refresh the page before I posted. I read way too much of this thread until I zombied out :drool: and then I watched two movies, I finally called it quits when the birds started getting loud this morning.

Thnx again for common-sense guidance. I will do some more follow-up on Long and Marquardt Re time alignment. Looks like Ed was the father of the concept, so the (his) UREI monitor is indeed the Real Deal. I remember Long's speaker reviews in Gene Pitt's "AUDIO" mag as the best and most informative.

As soon as I get the Sansui sweep tube siblings (models SM-80 & 1000) squared away for preliminary power-up check-out I'll start stuffing the x-over boards and get something going that I can fool with hands-on. Too many projects, not enuff resources.
 
You'll need a sub with those. Also, the built in crossover won't work with the ewave set up. You could build a big cab and include a sub making it a threeway.
 
re-reading the thread because it seems I forget more in a day then I remember! arrrg!!! its a good read...definitely gets me excited about the possibiities! I just received the PH612 waveguide/D220 CD from PE today.

Im also going to order the 12" round PE waveguide just because I love know the differences myself.

I believe what it boils down to is the absence of horn coloration. There are other factors as well, but, bottom line, you get compression driver clarity and dynamics with extended HF without horny sound. Horn theory has advanced considerably in recent years, and you're hearing the payoff in these waveguides. It's just silly how good they are. ;)

Just like a kid asking "Are we there yet?" over and over...Im assuming the PH612/D220 with the HP filters explained in this thread will have the same performance like Zilch posted 200 pages ago???

Yes.

Zilch have you posted your own opinoin on High Order Modes or is there a good link to read about HOMs???
I have not pursued HOMs. The definitive reference is the Geddes patent(s).

has anyone measured the location of the vertical off-axis nulls?

I've been reading Wayne Parham's posts, and his work over at Pi Speakers and he makes a good point about matching the off-axis nulls with the 'horn' vertical control angle. So, I searched the thread and found that calculations were done, and checked, and the conclusion was that for the e-wave any spacing under 12" would be OK. However, I'm not sure anyone has done measurements to see what happens, or to find out if the axis is tilted up or down. Because of the WG length being longer than the woofer I'd expect it to be tilted up a bit, but the crossover and voice coil inductance delay the woofer signal so maybe it's horizontal? Maybe it's no big deal??

(I'm working on getting an ECM8000 mic and TrueRTA working on an old laptop, so maybe I can measure my e-waves and see what's up, at least with my versions. :D )
 
Check Skywave-rider's posts; he has measured it.

I get the location and tilt of the plane by inverting the HF phase and looking for the deepest null, moving the mic up and down. Then, do the same from further out, and plot the angle. Confirm where the plane intersects the baffle from up close.

CLIO allows me to find the acoustic centers directly, but not everyone has this luxury. The first time I did this was on Mxlews' Viscount E'Waves. The result was not what we had supposed....

I think it's safe for me to say that this is different for different woofers, even though the crossover is consistent.

For fun, you can hear where the nulls are using pink noise; move your head up and down.

Tilted acoustic axis is not necessarily bad. Placement and listening positions may benefit from a skew one way or another.

I'd like to be able to calculate that in a system wide design some day.....:nerd:
