Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

EconoWave II

I am planning to populate my PE trapezoid cabinets with the QSC waveguide/horn, B&C 12PS32 12 inch woofers and B&C DE250 HF drivers. A new 4th order Linkwitz/Riley PC board has been laid out, and is waiting to be etched. The front baffle is being worked on at my shop at the company, and should be ready to install in a couple days.

With new HF drivers, waveguide, and crossover, this project will be outside the realm of EconoWave, but the whole concept of EconoWave was to lead us to experiment. This EconoWave derivative will at least take me there. Many others have struck out doing three ways, different drivers, and different horns/waveguides. Good on all of us who take it to the next step.

I have a supply of absolutely beautiful Carpathian Elm burl veneer, but it isn't flat, and I haven't figured out yet how to apply it. I tried the back of one cabinet, but it was a disaster. So they are going to appear in mahogany. Blahh!! They may look like something built by Magnavox or Curtis-Mathes.

The mahogany came out quite beautiful, Jack. I think its uniformity is the reason it is popular.

There's gotta be some cool way to finish it that doesn't look like a '50s console.

I'm surrounded by walnut here, and the mahogany Yamaha 690s are a standout in this respect. :yes:

Seriously, there is nothing wrong with mahogany. Just not my favorite kind of wood. My heart was set on something with active grain, which the elm burl has in spades. But maybe someday I will learn how to use it. Then, lookout!!

Hey Jack, get two pieces of glass a bit larger than the veneer. On the first piece of glass lay the veneer the spritz it down with water then lay the second piece of glass over it and weight it down. Let it sit like that for the weekend and glue it down. Don't use too much water, just a mist. Should look GREAT when you get your second pair done with the cool veneer:D:D:D

Yea, except my baffles are flush and the waveguide is mounted on top. Probably makes no diff. for measuring in the x-o region I think. Nice fit, BTW.
 
I'll have to order up more PE trap cabs to work with the stock eWaveguide and woofer behind. That's John's cab design, and the baffle's glued in, but it will provide data.

When Mxlews and I did this in C36 cabs, CLIO said front mount the woofer with the pre-eWave filter we used at the time.... :dunno:

I had a chance to listen to Ron's Econowave system this weekend and my oh my! I can't wait until my waveguides show up so I can finish mine. The Gause bass drivers paired with the econowaves sounded very, very nice.

Thanks to Ron for inviting me up to see what I have to look forward to. I had a great time!

Anybody used or have an opinion on the suitability of ElectroVoice SP12C drivers for an Ewave? (I just picked up a mint pair at GW for $12):D
 
Starting a half-a$$ eWave. I was talking to a friend this weekend about him building up eWaves and realized that I have the JBL L77s (need refoam), Dayton round horn (don't know if it is a wave guide or CD horn), Eminence (SP) ADS 1001 and all the xover parts to build the low eff. xovers. I know that the xovers won't match 100% the 210 or 220 but I'm sure it will be close......so what the hey, ah?

I haven't even moved those L77s you conned me into taking into the house. Nice move, by the way as we were putting the tube amp parts in your trunk: "Oh, these L77s are still here. Want to take a look at them?" And I fell for it as usual.

I have Ph612s, D220Tis, D210Tis and completely assembled Zilch eWave crossovers I can lend you. GeoFed had them on loan but he prefers the B&C DE10/ME10s I lent him later. I'll be doing another Secret Project for a while and won't be using these.

Yes, the ewave is another animal when combined with powerful 15 inch bass drivers. Are the QSC wave guides still back ordered? Let us know when your "large scale" e'waves get done......looks like you'll have some time, while the standard E'wave works with a minor tweek or so, both Augerpro over on HTguide forum and Jack and Zilch here are working on crossovers for this waveguide.

You measured bolt on 220 ti with the QSC? I'd like to see those curves.

That's OK, the basic lesson of E'wave is still being followed....While it was a way to learn about inexpensive 2-way Hi-Eff crossover/compensation, there is nothing wrong in ratcheting up the project using the same principals as the original Ewave. Here that lesson is in action, with E'wave taking a ride on the more costly (but still an amazing bargain) track.:thmbsp:

Just order the Qsc waveguide and B&C DE 250 drivers, you'll not regret it.:thmbsp:
