Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

No ports on that one 'cause it's acoustic suspension closed box. There's plenty of room on the baffle for a pair of 2" or larger diameter ports....

What about putting the port on the bottom of the JBL C36 style cabinet? Those leggs look to be ~8" long. Or possibly the back? I know distance from the wall makes a difference in sound with rear ported ... but how much is enough distance (back/bottom)?

No, you'll be building the standard 8-Ohm crossover. The drivers are playing in different passbands; they are not in parallel electrically except at the crossover frequency, where they are both rolled off by the filters....

EXCELLENT! I'll be ordering parts as soon as I figure out which cabinets I will be using. *Crosses fingers that I can get the C36's built inexpensively*

The original JBL stiletto legs are somewhat shorter than those I show. Shouldn't matter, though. As example, Jack's trapezoid cabs have the port(s) on the bottom.

I'm sure there's some minimum spacing required between the port opening and a boundary; I just don't know what that is. It's easily seen that if it gets too close, slot loading becomes a factor.

Info here, maybe? Too late tonight for me to read through it again:

Great Combo

The Selenium D220Ti / Dayton DC300-8 really makes a great cost effective combo. I've cranked my Mach 1 refurbs over 100db w/o breakup or bad noises. I left the cabs sealed, but my next set will be a ported trap similar to jackgriff's.

Has there been a comparison between the B&C and a JBL 2426? Yes the JBL is about twice the price but just wondering.

I've compared it extensively (DE250) with JBL 2425H, basically the same thing.
Listening, I really liked it, (2425) but when Zilch showed the response I was amazed at how fast it was rolling off. Very polite sounding in comparison. Might need a little more compensation, but there is a good reason why JBL engineers rolled off the 2425H in the 2 way 4430 monitor at 16,000 or so, distortion increases quickly above that point.

Good Morning Russell.:D

Thanks for the response. I was just wondering because people on CL sell pro cabs with these 24XX's in them for around $300-$350 and then you get a pair of woofers as well as some cabs. Better than buying new.

I seem to recall that the minimum distance to a boundary should be 2D, so a 4" port should be 8" or more from the floor. Seems reasonable. OTOH, I have Kef 103.3 speakers with a bottom woofer opening. They can be played on stands with a hole for the woofer opening or on 35mm feet on a shelf. Seems too low.

Im looking for opinions on trying this Celestion CD on the Pyle PH612 wave guide with the standard E wave crossover:scratch2:

Would the HF compensation work with this???

What the heck is PETP film, that's what they say the diaphragm is:dunno:

I can get them here for $90.00 each.

http://legacysoundservice.com/catal...DX1-1746 - 1" Exit HF Driver&products_id=595

Spec sheet says minimum crossover is 2200. If that's for power handling but the response is OK down below I'd say it might work wit ha 1600 hz crossover. It's also possible distortion increases down below, which would be undesirable.
No way to know if it will work with teh Ewave xo/compensation without trying/measuring it.

Definately!

I thought the E wave was crossed at 3Khz but it plays down to 1600Hz due to the bump in the response curve???

True. It depends on whether they mean 2200 as the minimum usable low range or not. Try Googling around to see what speakers that driver is used in and that will give you an idea of its appropriate applications.

There is a difference b/w Accoustic crossover and the electrical crossover point. The "electrical" is, for example, 3,000 for the Ewave's HF crossover electrically, that is where the math says these components will put it, but then that is mixed with the actual
accoustic response of the driver, it will vary.....i.e. the Selenium's accoustic response combined with the crossovers electrical response places it at 1600.

This is why measurement is so important. At first glance, one might have not considered the Selenium, I think its minimum crossover is listed as 2500 or so.
Since the plan is for 1600, one might think this driver cant be crossed over this low. However, when combined accoustic/electrical response was looked at, it was discovered that the electrical could be place as high as 3000 and the all over response would equal 1600, making the crossover sum correctly, yet the HP is 3000 so driver minimum isnt violated either....

Hoping that blurb didnt further confuse....:scratch2:

Yes. Must be measured. Selenium is listed as having a minimum usable crossover point of 2000, not 2500 as I stated above. When measured, the 3k crossover point results in a crossover point occurring at approx. 1600....when combined with the 220 ti's accoustic response.....
Different drivers have different physical characteristics which affect response, only way to know is to measure.

It says; Frequency range (Hz) 1200-20000.

I could always move up the woofer crossover a bit if there was a hole:scratch2:

It appears to roll off on top at roughly the same rate as the D220ti so Id think the HF compensation would work???

There are plenty of options for an army of eWavers to try.

Jack and I can't do all that; we've set the benchmark for comparison.

Maybe I'll start an "Explorations" page.... :thmbsp:

Every since I built mine, I look at any box speaker as a candidate.
