Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Great feed back- I'll definately play with that network and probably pull that driver and A/B to the Soleniums D210I's I just got from PE a couple days ago.

Well Andyman left here not to long ago, we listened to my KPM-10.0 wave version for
a while on a variety of music in a not to great setup, with a non Jack xover setup with
electronics that I'm sure leave a lot to be desired, that I was feeling pretty good about!

None of the horn/honkyness, none of the horn tunnel sound, but yet open and dynamic,
the bass at times in the outdoor canapy room was a bit excessive and overpowering to
where a minor tweak from the electronics was needed, but to me a good thing as I plan
to use mine with single ended tube amps and the extra bass is a plus! Andyman I believe
likes the midrange better on his Altecs and I probably agree but find it quite satisfying an
enjoyable with the wave as well plus the extra top and bottom on the KPM is a nice bonus
that I need/want.

So for first trial run they came through with flying colors as far as I'm concerned, I'm using
the xover from the parts express BR-1 kit speakers as I happen to have spares, they run a
xover that's not to far from Jacks, using the same woofer coil size but different caps and a
slightly higher xover point with no equalization an a zobel on the woofer as well. (OK not close)
(the BR-1 xover pads the tweeter about 6db and matches this woofer sensitivity quite good)


So I'm sure once I get the xover optimized they'll be even better, but for now pretty DAM good!
 
Cool Keg. I am still listening to mine using the xover that came with the Technics(sp) and am still amazed at how good they sound. Deep bass, crystal clear mids and highs. I am still debating whether or not to put them back on my Imps or do a full blown EWG with the proper xover. If you're not doing anything tomorrow, you should come over and we can do a shoot out. Cheers.

Wait until you get the proper crossover in there. I love my Altec A7 which I have tweaked on for years. Glorious mid range, oh yes. but the 4647 / Econowave smokes them hard in every way. Clarity, top end, bottom end, mids everything. I still love the Altecs, they are what they are!:thmbsp:

Do the crossover! It is tailored to the Selenium driver/waveguide. Without the compensation, you're only part way there, plenty left. When I first got my waveguides I too tried them in a non perfect application with surprising results.
I screwed on a JBL 2425 ( didnt have the seleniums yet ) and put it on top of the A7s. I just wondered if it could keep up with the WAY larger 511B and 802 8G compression drivers. I used the crossover that was in the A7s, an Eminence
800 hz, with all caps changed of to daytons, and compensation circuit added on. They kept up with the 511B alright, no problem. A most impressive display!
But once they were on top of the 4647s along with proper crossover, they were amazing. Try the crossover, the magic is there! those Technics will
Shine. I remember when those speakers were in the shops. I eyeballed a pair
the day I bought my first seperate pre amp, A Nikko unit that a friend of mine still uses in a second system. Paired it to a SAE XXXIB. Also long gone, I often wished I had kept that piece.

Just bought a pair of ESS AMT 1C and will pick them up tomorrow. I really wanted the Heil tweet for my Imperials, but I think the woof and cab might make a good EWG....what do you think? Cheers.

I think it's time you got set up with measurement gear.

You're spinnin' your wheels without it.

Behringer DEQ2496 like Jackgiff uses would be good.

Others have reported that AMT-1 has an octave-wide 9dB peak at 7 kHz. If so, they're not all what prevailing opinion says they are, at least not without some serious filter design work to make them play flat.

Get E'Wave set up with the proper crossover, and you won't need any VHF augmentation. Two-way obviates a bunch of driver integration issues.

You want better than the Seleniums, then move up to BMS.... :thmbsp:
 
Yah but that Heil tweeter sure does sound good, won't be getting rid of mine anytime soon.
 
Oh I hear yu, E'Wave is going to sound great, no doubt here.

Still won't change the fact my Heil tweeters sound great as well.:thmbsp:
 
I am building both. The jensen Imps are for me in the family room and the E'wave is for my wife in the living room. I am not giving up on one for the other. Cheers.

I'd stick with the already worked out circuit. Typically it plays + or - 2.0 - 2.5 db, plus the compensation is specific to the Selenium and this particular wave guide. Build it, your Ess tweets will be religated for other uses. Not to take away, just this thing w proper crossover is hard to believe. My A7 experiment wa surprising, but w/o the cross over w/compensation, you're leaving the magic on the table.

The compensation circuit should make a huge difference as others have said. A non-generic low pass crossover would also help a great deal, I suspect.

Yup, there's attenuation, but no HF compensation in the BR-1 circuit Kegger posted @ #929.

E'Wavers should review the Peavey Tech Note @ #935.... :yes:
