And I've already done some tweaking to the low pass, 10uf cap instead of 12 makes the
transition to the guide pretty seemless when your even 1 foot in front of the speaker, an
the zobel being used for the woofer as well.

Enough tweaking for now, need to get them down stairs and see how they perform there.

Anyone have both the pyle and jbl waveguides to compare how the drivers fit/mount?
If not the guys with the jbl guide can yu tell me about yours as well to see something?

The pyle opening/throat that touches the end of the driver has some casting like marks
on it at the sides that go horizontal that can mark up the driver, also the openings just
a tad small at the end where it rubs the screen on the driver an tries to twist/distort it's
shape when you tighten down the driver or possably overtighten it.:no:

I made a very thin gasket from some pipe fitting rope, cleaned up the end and fitted it so
the screen of the driver is now the exact size of the opening so there is a clean path. The
driver can now tighten down nicley and a perfect fit, with a nice smooth tansition/exit path.

How bout the jbl guide or any thoughts about what I mention with the pyle?
 
Yep I got that part, on the pyle only the threads are metal, the end that the driver buts
up against is plastic, rough, and a hair smaller then the screen on the driver, how bout jbl?
 
The JBL throat opening is in a plastic shoulder against which the driver stops.

It is neither perfectly round nor perfectly concentric.

It captures the D220Ti screen, but does not move or deform it.

Sounds like the jbl is a bit larger on where the screen shows through, the pyle is just a touch to small. (for my liking)

But hey that's what they make tools for! It's a great fit now, and with the gasket it will stay snugged right on up also.
Probably not really anything to worry about, but I didn't like it and fixed it to make me feel better about the situation. :)
 
Hi Keg, I noticed the same thing. When I tightened down the driver, the lip on the guide pushed the screen into a perfectly formed concaved shape.
 
How do these sound compared to, say, an AR-3a or a JBL L-166? I'm curious, as there's a pair of the Heath LE14s for sale locally, and reading this thread gets me thinking too much....
 
I am running the EWG just sitting on top of a pair of Techniques 4500 and they blow away the other speakers you mentioned.....I've had both. I am not even running the EWG crossover, just the stocker that came with the 4500. I can't even imagine how they will sound with the EWG crossover. The best part of this has been the increadable low cost of getting into them. Cheers.

It will smoke both of those. They will sound like you are listening through a pillow in comparison. This wouldnt even be close, not at all, a total massacre! Also, I think the LE14 drivers were the one's That were used with the 900 hz woofer crossover, check with Zilch or Jackgiff to be certain.

That's the beauty of this thing...its reasonable enough pricewise that anyone can dabble. The real eye opener is that not only is it cheap, its one of the best speaker most here will have ever owned. You'll crap when you get the crossover done. The combination of modern driver/waveguide/compensation
results in unbelieveable synergy. Its just plain silly how good it can sound.

This thing just keeps gathering momentum with more and more pairs. I havent heard one disappointed member. In fact, most have been leaving notes/posts about the total surprise upon fireup. Its a great project, the number of views/posts shows the continued interest.

Easily proves that most anyone, following the thread directions can assemble not just a passable speaker set, but a way good sounding one.

Build the crossover djnagel, those technics speakers being 2 ways originally should work great. They really can sound better, in a large way, when the compensation for the waveguide is implimented. You are in for (another) big treat. Get PE on the horn and get the parts!:thmbsp:

Actually Russellc, I am going to use a round waveguide and compression driver from PE on those Technics as is without doing the crossover. Thoses are going to my daughters dormroom. I am using the EWG on a pair of beautiful corner speakers that were made in the 50s for a church. I am just waiting for the right woofer for that project. Those will be my wife's system in the living room. I'll do those with the right xover and make them reel perdy! Cheers.

I believe the first post does that. In short, it is the top half of a 2-way system,
consisting of the Selenium 220 driver ( some have used the 210), the JBL waveguide (9.90 each) and a designed cross over with compensation specific to this driver wave guide combination. One crossover is for woofers over 95 db efficiency, one for woofers under 95 db. Then one selects a woofer that plays well to at least 1500-2000 hz or so. The woofer section of the crossover is then tweeked to better suit the selected woofer. Read the thread, its very educational, and various woofers have been used. Some have just taken an existing speaker system and disconnected the woofer and hooked it up, plopping the waveguide on top. Very worthwhile read, go ahead, it will answer more speaker/crossover design questions than most know how to ask.:music:

What is IS is an inexpensive modern compression driver + constant directivity waveguide mid/high frequency "module" complete with the requise high-pass filter, including HF compensation, suitable for use with a low frequency driver/box of your choice, to construct a complete DIY system having excellent performance. Generic low-pass filters are specified to get you up and running easily; optimizing that portion, if desired, is up to the builder.

A dozen or so AKers have built their own iterations of the project, which are documented in the thread. Seems no one has been disappointed yet, though The Bauhausler is yet to complete his.... ;)
