Now if we can get a similar elegant high eff reasonable impedance version.... this thread would have an other ewave winner twin for the chip amp & tube boobs in DIY hifi....:sing:

The waveguide imparts a 1st order rising response on the tweeter, well defined and very uniform over the range from 1500Hz on up. Below that, the tweeter/waveguide rolls off. A 1st order filter complements the natural rising response perfectly, flattening the system response with diminishing distortion levels as frequency goes down.

Sometimes "less is more" and that is totally in line with the ewave concept Well done Zilch & Schu & everyone else....:scratch2:

We can always call it the pWave instead of eWave. P for premium. Or u for ultimate.

The eWave bang for buck is impressive.

It might be a little while before I swap out the eWaves for the pWaves. Shocking that I'm thinking upgrade when the originals are only 6 weeks old.
 
I would find it hard to resist trying to reduce the bump between 1.5 and 2K. It can be seen in the woofer's response and I'd think increasing the woofer cap to 15 uF or perhaps the L to 5 mH would help tame it. Was this XO derived through simulation or working with the actual prototype?

It's true the bump though only a few dB is in the most sensitive hearing range. I think the problem is that changing the component(s) will shift the forward axis. I still wonder why not use a zobel to take down the spike a the top of the woofer's response, thereby leaving a smoother slope to sum and work with.

Having been a DE250/QSC user for a while I can tell you that if you move around while listening, a few dB bump in the mid-range is moot, because the nulls loom nearby and the response in that region will vary. Nothing will change that given the x-o frequency/spacing.

And in spite of that, it sounds good.

A part of me wonders what would happen if you used the pWave XO on the 210/220/PT.

I might try it - subjectively.
 
I suspect this leads to rethinking all the variant crossovers and not just this specific combo.
This combo, DE250 and the QSC waveguide, is unique. Add a particular woofer, a specific cabinet and driver spacing, and the requirement that the forward axis be steered at a small upward angle from the midpoint between the drivers, and an optimized design requires this level of effort.

This design is moderately high efficiency. You want higher, use KappaLite 3012HO and a sub. Look at the efficiencies of those two drivers in comparison to those we typically use here.

The impedance issue for tubes is easily handled with an L/R/C filter in front of the works.

Both. I provided the measurements in the actual cabinets for modeling in PCD. Pete took up the challenge over on Tech Talk forum and worked up the circuit. You can see us doing the standard eWave with DE250 earlier in that thread. I then built it and measured it, paying particular attention to the location of the forward null.

Try it in PCD and observe how the forward axis shifts.

We all need to maintain some perspective here; it's optimization we're doing, using a bigger flashlight. Without any of that, even, the fundamentals of EconoWave comprise a huge step up from conventional designs, constant directivity being the major one.... :yes:

Question, How true to life are the curves in WinISD?

I've been playing around with it to find a 12" woofer I want to use for my Ewaves, I've been looking hard at the Eminence Beta 12A-II. If I plug that into WinISD and use a ported 4.75 cubic ft box it shows a -3db of 43Hz with a very flat response up past 1khz. How realistic is this? If its accurate thats definitely what I'm going to build. The Deltalite II 2512 goes even lower in the same box with a -3db of 38Hz.

The other thing I wonder about is if the woofers higher freq. performance is going to suffer by using it down that low?
