Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

'fraid I've not followed along for all 10000+ posts, but I recall the genesis of
the thread... so apologies if the areas I -think- I've searched for have been
covered:

Will be building a center channel around two JBL 228J drive units and the
90x50 screw-in PT WG ... essentially an AC28/95 but with the horn in the
center.

Has anyone looked at the "EWave concept" in this form factor and in horizontal
placement? Using either of the internal AC28 networks (H or V optimized)
would likely be non-optimal with the greater displacement between the mid
bass units.

At any rate, I welcome any thoughts or ideas while I wait for UPS to drop
stuff off. Then I'll give it some more thought myself. :yes:

Much as I love the Infinities - the Ewaved NL Advents on top are a better speaker. But only after putting in DE250's IMO, not with the Seleniums :D

I am seriously considering it!!

Could someone be so kind as to design a crossover for me as I do not have much experience at this.

This is a 4-ohm system with EMIT tweeter and crossover frequency of 3kHz.


Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!

Well, the short easy answer is to use the 4-ohm version (for 4 ohm woofer) of the "standard" eWave crossover with the "standard" horn and driver. The parts list is here:

Perhaps someone that knows more about that particular woofer can chime in if they have any suggestions to tweak LF section of the crossover. It may work just fine without any mods. Hook it up and test it. Many successful builds have been completed by folks that know nothing about designing crossovers...like me. :D

I designed one on LHF long ago for Hamilton, and you have heard it, as I recall. I followed classic MTM rules and hoped the 2342 directivity would assume control when deployed horizontally. It'd be interesting to know what the horizontal polars actually look like.

The only others I've built are my SK2-1000 clones, but they use one of the midwoofers as a "helper", i.e., not true MTM, and the waveguide is above the pair. I've certainly been wanting to try what you suggest, and have described it several times here. There has been at least one build by others:

The DE 250 and The QSC are a killer good combo! As has been shown by Zilch, Jack and Pete, it does take a little fiddling with, otherwise it can be like a spike in the head, especially for the first hours of use. Once properly set up, it is breath taking. As Zilch has found, Wayne also has it sussed out in the 4 Pi, and of course Earl with his Summa speakers. This driver is fantastic for the money. Like the 220 ti is fantastic for its price, the DE 250 is a great upgrade, and a fantastic price for said upgrade.

Do, and make sure its all sussed out for the application being used. Also, needs quite a bit of breakin, I had mine turned down signifigantly at first, then little by little it could be turned up more and more. Now it sounds glorious, and my crossover still needs work...Soon as I get Excel 2003 loaded

I'd like to hear the new filter. When I first started listening to the QSC, I had high hopes but I also understand that it is not an inherent issue, just one of tweaking.

I hope to have that chance again Russell. Last night I picked up a stack of mahagony that is 2' x 4' x 8' and am going to build my own wood horns so I won't have the time to build the QSC/250 combo, but I'm hoping someone around here will have a set built before long or maybe a pair at the fest.

Sold! Two QSC horns on order. Now I have to figure out PCD enough to model the changes from the Kappalite 3012LF to the 3015. That should keep me busy learning for a while. Now to wait until PE has the DE250 on sale again...:smoke:

I'm on exactly the same learning curve, just a little behind you. I'm going to match it to the JBL 2235H, but first I need to install excel 2003 and look at it, I've never messed with spread sheets before...

I'll be right there with you guys. I got the QSC horns a week ago, and have the DE250s. What I'm short on right now is woofers. I have a set from a pair of Marantz Imperial 7 that look like they may be up to the task. I have a pair of JBL 123a in another set of speakers, but I hate to rip them up at this point. If I find another pair locally, I may pick them up. I have 3.5 cu boxes to put them in, now I just need to cut the baffles........:yes:

PE Part Number 255-052 1.0 mH 20 AWG L1 (QSC)

I poked the P/N in to add this to my cart, but it came up as a 1.5 mH...

255-048 IS a 1.0, but the price does not agree with the list in post #9564. Is there a 1.0 @$5.54 or is the one I found it, with a new price now that the demand has gone up?

I'm seriously thinking about adding a couple of turns of 20 gage to the 0.9 mH I bought for the first iteration. Would it work as is OK?

BTW, the 8X8 looked flatter with a 1.5 uF C3. I switched them out for the odd looking ones (354267-001) yesterday when they showed up on my doorstep. Still need to check 'em out on the RTA.
 
255-048 is the correct part#. Pricing is from the 2010 catalog.

0.9 mH will work; your forward axis will move a bit, is all.

[I wouldn't suggest adding turns to it.... :dunno: ]
