Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

The pics of the front panel show a small screw a couple of inches below the woofer. This screw goes into the end of the front to back 2x4 brace. This brace would have to be removed, as the wave guide covers it by an inch or two. Even with the brace removed, the guide could not be movedany closer to the mid-bass driver, as it also interferes with the bottom two ports.

G'day Russell- just another option for you- it's possible to remove the 2X4 and replace it with two braces glued and screwed to the baffle at each of the triangular points formed by the waveguide, woofer and port. No problems with this at all. Waveguide could be positioned very close to woofer.

You first :) I'm still considering installing the Qsc WG into my Quantum Jrs. Not sure anybody has Ewaved an Infinity or not. I think the RSb's have the same cab size as the Jrs.

Much as I love the Infinities - the Ewaved NL Advents on top are a better speaker. But only after putting in DE250's IMO, not with the Seleniums :D

I'll be trying the Celestions Duke is using in his new products. If that combo works out, you can move the DE250s to the QSCs we see there.... ;)
 
Would the crossover need to be reworked for the econowave standard kit for in-wall installation? I'd have part of the enclosure coming out of the wall, just to allow for depth of speakers and to allow for a 45* angle.

Also, is there a crossover optimized for the standard kit or is the generic crossover recommended?
 
The "Kit" crossover is optimized for rear-mounted DC300. If that's what you're using, then start with it.

Otherwise, use the standard eWave crossover, which I assume is what you mean by the "generic" one.

In either case, because you are mounting in-wall, you may have to alter the lowpass section by adjusting the values of L2 and/or C2 for optimum performance.... :dunno:
 
Drop in upgrades?

After building 5 eWaves with the Pyle 612 horn and D220Ti drivers I've got the itch to work on an upgrade. If these are good, why not try for better?

Being lazy, I'll start by looking at the simple upgrades first, understanding that all of them will require a reworked XO.

The BMS 4540ND looks like it will screw right in to the Pyle/JBL horn. Simple as long as it is happy going as low as the standard eWave.

Is there a 1" bolt on version of the Pyle 612 horn? That would open up a of options for those of us that don't want to cut a larger hole or don't have room for the QSC horn.

QSC horn and B&C DE250 - lots of work already done.

JBL 1.5" waveguide and BMS 4555. Great except that the horn is not in the econo price range. Is the horn the same overall size as the 1" version? Looks a lot like it...

Any suggestions for a more budget friendly 1.5" horn?

With only two ports left, I'd be looking to enlarge those and installing the proper length ducts for the desired tuning.
Actually, I run it with either one port, or two ports open, so losing the bottom two wouldnt be a big deal. Got to thinking, maybe a board that would cover the two ports and the rest on down, leaving the woofer hole as is, uncovered. with a thickness of 3/4 to 1 inch thick, it would help with the phasing, like 4430 used, underneath the waveguide.

I bought my BMS 4552nd used. If buying new I'd go DE250.

The 4552 performs well but costs about $60 more per compression driver.

JBL uses its equivalents down as low as 1.3 kHz. I tried that, building the 4th order XOs, even, and didn't much like the result. I am presently running them on MRX/PRX waveguides at 2.2 kHz, and that works.

JBL has just come out with a new round of 1.5" PT waveguides, and I am looking into them. They are all 12" square format, however.... :dunno:

I am also working on replicating the waveguide on my LSR25's for a Ti tweet for possible VHF extension as well.:D
 
I would like to hear the QSC and 250 again. I heard it a Ross' house and it sizzled my ears. I think he was using the standard eWave crossover. We listened for about 5 minutes and had to remove that combo and put on the JBL 6" horn with 210 driver....which sounded just fantastic. I'd like to spend a bit more time figuring out why the QSC/250 was so extremly sharp.

I've been working on electronics* for a few weeks instead of speakers. the 220Ti and 6" JBL work really well with the Advent woofers in DQ-10 cabs. I actually feel like I need to stop fooling around and make this a permanent setup. I did a lot of testing on the DE250/QSC combo in January. I got it to play pretty flat and I'm sure a crossover could be created that made that combo mate well with the Advent/DQ-10 bottom.
Subjectively, the QSC sounds more 'directional' to me than the 6" JBL WG. The DE250/QSC combo is more sensitive, but that's not necessary with the insensitive Advent woofers. I feel like with the smaller WG I have a wider listening area in the room. Again, this is subjective.
All things being equal, I'd go for the WG that sounds the same and is 8" narrower and 4" shorter for more packaging options.
The QSC horns are out on loan to Marchking and the DE250s will be going away to fund new foolishness.

*Restored 2 Scott 299s, a Fisher 400, SAE 2400 and other stuff I've forgotten.
 
The 6" waveguide is less directional vertically with its 90° x 90° dispersion pattern; your observations are correct.

Don't know if you've been following along, but as of a couple of weeks ago, there's a new highpass for the DE250/QSC that you may want to try.... :yes:
