Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Total newbie here needing guidance. I've watched this thread for awhile now and was intrigued. Today I picked up a pair of empty L200 cabinets in very nice condition, with the intention of doing an Econowave on them. Couple of questions for the experts:

(1) What would be some good choices for the woofers (assuming I want to keep the cost of the LF drivers under around $300/pair)? I was looking at the Dayton DC380-8 and ST385-8, and Eminence Kappa 15 LFA. Are those good choices, and would they work with the crossover design posted in the link at the beginning of the thread?

(2) The baffle on these is set back about 3-4 inches from the front edge of the cabinets. If I stay with a baffle in this position, will I have diffraction issues? Or should I plan on moving the baffle closer to flush with the front of the cabinet?

Sorry for the beginner questions, but any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what the latest xo design is for the HO variant, trying to get it straight. The lowpass is the same(?) (4.5 mH and 12uF), but not sure about the highpass. L1 still 1 mH, but C1, R1, and R2 are? Also, is it a problem if the DCR of the inductors varies from what is noted on the schematic/BOM?

It's in Post# 9564. It still has a typo on the L1 P/N S/B 255-048.

LP = 2.5mH, 15uF. HP = 4.0uF, 1.0mH, 2.7/8 Ohms. Waiting for any feedback Schumacher may have on the LF comp, presently, before deeming it "done" for now. :dunno:

...I'll bet the 2512 will go both ways...and be the avenue of choice for many...

Jack and I first started this with L200s five years ago over on LHF, cutting the premium version of eWaveguides in them. We used different compression drivers and a lower crossover frequency with 2235H woofers:

Your ticket to success will be finding 15" woofers that'll play competently up into the 1.5 kHz region. It looks like either the Kappalite 3015 (perhaps LF) or Deltalite II 2515 will get there, Delta, Delta Pro, Kappa, Kappa Pro, you'll have to model them in that size cabinet (4.5 cuft?) for starters. I'd be REAL tempted to try the original L200/4325 woofers for this, as well, LE15-B/2216, or 2234H.

Also, it looks like the QSC 14" x 10" waveguide might fit in there, opening up a bunch of HF driver options.

I wouldn't worry much about the recess (although I once did) as these controlled directivity waveguides do not illuminate the edges like wide-dispersion horns would. Note that JBL put those slots at the sides to mitigate that somewhat. If you use QSC, there'd certainly not be much harm in moving them forward an inch or two, as they have a deep profile, and that'll move the acoustic center of the driver more inline with that of the woofer; there's plenty of room behind the grille for that.... :thmbsp:

Thanks very much, that gives me plenty of options. This should be an adventure, as I've never embarked on anything quite like this before. I'm sure things will get messy but hopefully I'll wind up with something halfway bearable. I appreciate the help.

truth seeker , i think you maybe right , it will go both ways - for standard and deluxe
I just got one of the Deltalite II 2512 Neos and now testing with the D220ti and PH612 horn and its sounding real good so far. I use the same 3Khz xover for the D220ti and for the woofer I used 1.8Khz xover ( L - 1mh , C - 7.7uf).
 
I dont use any Lpad in the HF part. HF comp is R1 - 25ohms , R2 - 16 ohms and the cap is 0.55uf. I dont have any testing equipment of such to show a graphical look at how the response is , but my ears I saying WOW so far. Hope Zilch can give it a try soon
 
I built the new crossover with standard values for the Kappa lite and DE 250.
Seems to work fairly well with the 2235H, better than I imagined. I Am using the zobel from 4430. As soon as I get a little more time on it, I should be measuring capable.

Then I want to run curves for the HP and LP for both this crossover as well as the one I was using which employed the LP from 4430. Then, with the help of PCD and a load of questions for Pete and Zilch, should be able to suss things out for 2235H. It was sounding awfuly good last night!

I got my crossover boards today (man that was quick) and have a small question. I haven't been able to source the 4 mH inductor as spec'ed. I can get the 16 gauge 4 mH from PE but the DCR value is significantly different. Can I use that one or would it be better to go up/down .5 mH until the correct one is available? I've got the Dayton 12" and the 220 compression driver.
 
DCR doesn't matter hugely, but I certainly prefer to have the inductor mount neatly on the board. Going down 0.5 mH will alter the response a bit, but you might find less LF step compensation preferable if you're using them with boundary reinforcement.... :dunno:
 
I haven't figured out where these will go in the house so it's hard to determine if boundary effect will play a role. I'll use the correct value to start and work from there. I'd rather have the inductor mounted neatly as well but I'd planned on mounting them on their own board with stand-offs so using the monster to start won't be too bad. I'll eventually be able to get the right sized one.
 
Combo doing Remarkably well for not being optimized for this driver.
Cant wait to have it properly adjusted for the 2235H!

Havent tried the 1 mh coil yet, but its only being driven by a MC-225 tube amp right now...

i'm looking at the parts lists for the project, and found 3 of them for 4ohm, 8ohm, and 16ohm drivers. i am doing the Variant 2 x-over for the jbl l14a project into a santana cab, so, which parts list do i go with? i'm assuming i will use the 8 ohm list, as both my drivers are 8 ohm, but, i wanna make sure.
