Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I was stunned what happened when I first hooked those components together.... :yes:

Yeah, sort of the same reaction here. At first I thought it was a little "restrained" sounding....at first. Many times things do sound this way when what went before was a little "unrestrained". Previously, The DE 250 was sounding smooth, perhaps a tad bit dry with some material, especially FM radio.

The new crossover gives a much more natural sound, the crossover region might not be spot on for my combo yet, but the DE 250 just soars without a trace of spit or dryness. Best I've heard it, and I've been one of the earliest advocates of the DE 250/ QSC combo. Sounding mighty fine as is! ( and the addition of the 4430 zobel, which I havent tried with out yet. )

Overall sound of the speaker ( JBL 4507 box, JBL 2235H, DE 250 + QSC waveguide. ) Is very classic JBL like, very warm, (Maybe too warm) with a nice bass "hump" giving the speaker authority and wall shaking bass. This, along with the DE 250 just soaring, never heard it this clear!

donprice- thanx for your patience. i have no experience with reading or understanding schematics, so...let me guess: your link indicates a cap value of 15uf, and a coil value of 2ohms. correct?

"C"= Cap
"L" = Coil
"R" =Resistor

DCR is the resistance of the coil

The coil (inductor) is 2.0 mH (milli-Henrys, not ohms). Get the crossover circuit boards from Zilch. The instructions included are a big help and they look really nice when you are done.

Zilch, with the standard ewave, just wanted to know does the change from using 4.7uf orginally to 3.3uf Cap and 0.6mh to 0.8mh Inductor for the HF Xover (D220ti) does this make a big difference in the HF sound ? Is it alot better with the change of parts used?
 
flush/recess mount woofer / horn ?

should the woofer be flush mounted or from rear of baffle ? should horn be surface or flush mounted ? donc

wave guides and horns are not anything new so what's the difference with econo-waveguides that has started this trend ? donc

I think it is the bang to buck ratio. For under $200/pair for the horn, driver, and crossover you something that a relative novice can pair up with an appropriate woofer and get something that sounds as good or better than what you might spend much more on elsewhere. The efficiency and SPL capabilities of the eWave really appeals to those of us that want to be able to knock the paint off the walls when desired. It isn't for everyone.

From a geek's perspective, it is really cool to see all the colorful curves that get generated from the frequency response measurements. :thmbsp:
 
Here is post #15. Some explanation from Zilch

"This thread represents a paradigm shift in approaching DIY two-way speaker design. The HF section is conceived as a module or building-block which may be mated with an appropriate LF section either built within the LF enclosure or sitting atop one, standing alone or packaged in its own box, a model commonly used in portable sound reinforcement gear.

It will work with virtually any woofer(s) capable of playing competently up into a crossover region of 1.2 kHz or above. The overall sound of the complete system will depend largely upon the characteristics of the LF module, which is playing both bass and lower midrange, and how well the two integrate with each other.

So, the answer is look to the response characterisics of the LF section with the HF being essentially fixed. It will mate with high- and low-efficiency woofers alike as the sensitivity of the compression driver is quite high, and only minimal compensation, which consumes some of that, is required for it to play essentially flat out to 20 kHz. An L-Pad on a passive crossover or the gain setting on an active one establishes the HF/LF balance of the overall system.... "

Frankly, you can get surprisingly good sound for under $200 including LF. Does not seem to have a number of the unpleasant aspects of horns.
