Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Another general question that I need answered before I proceed down a path I shouldn't...will these eWave designs sound similar to the pro PA speakers in an HT application? I was contemplating the deluxe version and then noticed a few JBL pro products that had similar features, already built for same or less price.
Not, generally, but you're going to have to be specific. The closest equivalents are the AE series, and JBL's neodymium woofers alone exceed the cost of eWave Deluxe:

I can't answer your question but am curious. Did you ever live in MN?

Not sure what that is referring to either??

I was more looking at something like the JBL MRX512M...but for some reason I thought they were available for cheaper than I am seeing now...I guess I need to just stay focused and start acquiring parts to force myself down a path. :music:

Another question...

Can I build a small (2 cuft) sealed enclosure for the deluxe woofer and then just set the QSC horn on top so that it has a similar appearance to this without any modifications to the design?

Yes.

How far forward the waveguide is located is critical to optimally aiming the forward axis and vertical nulls, however, so provide means for fixedly mounting the waveguide/driver combo in the determined location....

What is more important? Driver face alignment or the magnet alignment at the backside?

Neither. It's the locaton of the acoustic centers that matter, in the crossover frequency region.

In the Deluxe instance, the faces are not in alignment; the woofer (to the front of the face gasket) is recessed, ~1" behind the waveguide. When the waveguide is recessed flush, which is the intent, it'll be more like 0.75", the baffle thickness....

So basically like the QSC picture I posted above...but the woofer should be mounted to the back side of the front baffle...or just make the entire baffle 0.75" behind the front face of the waveguide??

BTW - sweet response time!

Yes, for use with the crossover as designed.

Other alignments, you're on your own.

[It took us six months to figure this out and arrive here.... ]

For those interested in a Deltalite E-wave "in-wall"

Over at PE Tech Talk, someone told of their intent to do an in-wall set of E-waves using the Deltalite setup.

XO changes are quite substantial, but I thought I'd post some modeled results for those contemplating HT to the max.

Baffle step compensation is basically eliminated and the tweeter's level has been raised accordingly.

This would be a starting point, but should be real close to final.

You sure can Greg. Here is my build. The WG just sits on top of the cab.

.

I am building 80hz front loaded tractrix horns at the moment and they sound much different, but for the money, the eWave is a GREAT deal.

Sorry about that. I knew a Greg Mitch once upon a time but it was many years ago.

It was just easier to ask if you had ever lived in MN, than did you used to live in MN and attend Kellogg High School in Little Canada MN in the mid 70's ;)

Project Ewave Video Theater Underway!

FINALLY getting underway with the project I mentioned here:

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3102330&postcount=7482

A whole SET of E-waves for the main Video room of Anime Weekend Atlanta.

Got all the parts, and just bought and have half-cut the wood. A few more rip cuts, and gluing will commence!

I'm going to build the front three (15" woofers) now, and do the rear two (10" woofers) later (within the next two months).

Regards,
Gordon.

Sorry Zilch...I am not trying to meddle with it...I just want a different look. I hope the sound is the same.

I very much appreciate the help!

I am leaning toward the QSC waveguide for the dramatic affect behind the acoustic screen but...I am not sure if the extra money for the "deluxe" would be noticeable in my modest theater. What was the design intent for the "deluxe" version? Is it a matter of louder? Deeper? Just to mate up with the Eminence driver?

Again...appreciate the help.

After I got confused, I kind of figured out that is what the question was fishing for...been there but never lived there...Mitchell is full last name. :music:

I thought it could be that also (Mitchell), but figured who knows. It's a small world as they say

If you haven't been already, Greg, welcome to AK!

What was the design intent for the "deluxe" version?
The standard eWave is entry level, and the established value leader. Our intent was that it open a pathway for exploration of the design alternative it embodies, and that's exactly what happened.

Many builders were very pleased with the results of their projects and expressed a desire for guidance in building an upgraded version incorporating improved components and a high efficiency woofer in a kit cabinet. The development of the design over the past six months is documented in this thread, once again with contributions from many members.

Is it still EconoWave? Jack and I wrestled with that early on, and the answer is, "Very much so!" Indeed, with Geddes Abbey kits now $2800 per pair, Deluxe remains WAY out in front as value leader.... :music:

As well as Duff's. The parts maybe more money but the value is very high, so in respect to that I would still call it "Econo" as well.
Besides you can have what ever cabinet/finish your heart desires.

People have started to delve into the "Very High End" with parts that are "Expensive" but from a stand point of the "Manufactured" horn loaded speakers, these have much more "fun" involved as well as satisfaction. Less expensive too.

Most people will tinker with their projects VS tinkering with their E2's or 1400 Array's.
Onward Econo Wave!:thmbsp:

Waveguides ordered! Now to fill a parts express cart...

Ok so the compression driver is sold out but seems it will be in stock shortly and I don't expect to have these all built by then anyway.

What other parts, odds and ends will I need? I am thinking some nice binding posts, any wiring accessories? This will be my first foray into speaker building so don't assume I own anything I will need to complete this. Things I can pick up at Home Depot...no big deal. Things needed to order are what I am worried about.

I am going to put the WG up top of a woofer enclosure so I am thinking I just put another set of binding posts for the compression driver on the top and throw the crossover inside the lower box??

Thanks!
